The name Mark Read gives me goosebumps.

Around 1980 something, I was reading the form on a Friday night and spotted this horse owned by Read and to be ridden by Malcolm Johnston (the best jockey in the country at the time) at 100/1. At its first start it came 9th.

Alarm bells rang. Straight to Canterbury Saturday morning and got 66/1 about it with a sly redback each way on it with the bookies. Apparently got backed off the map to start at about 9/1 and duly won pulling away.

Getting Closer ended up being a multiple Group winner from memory.

Johnny Tapp ( or someone) did a 2 part interview with Mark Read and fairdinkum was the best racing interview I ever seen . He had horses with little known trainers and even had his mother in on the stings apparently she would drop her hanky or something and all the boys hit the bookies at once. Clever bastard sent guys to country tracks , all in on the sting look it up
