It wasn’t even a 50 50
It was a dead set knock on.
It was dropped cold in front of him.

it was one of the most blatant .. knock backs .. ive ever seen
at no stage did the ball propel toward the bulldogs in goal , & even if it did , as long as the first touch sends it backward , which it did , its a knock back

as someone said
we now think every ball hitting the ground is a knock on & its about time referees refereed to the actual laws of the game

You obviously didn’t see the one my misses did last night.

They should make it dropped ball rule.
That would just fix it.
Unless it’s an obvious tap backwards.
The dude just dropped it cold.

If the ball is heading North, it needs to travel South to be a knock on. It doesn't matter if it doesn't travel as far North as it might have because it has been touched. It is still travelling in the same direction. This thread almost makes me feel sorry for the refs.

This sums it up.

Why can't Brisbane fans accept the fact they were lucky to be in the game let alone win it ? Refs won you merkins the game plain and simple.... It doesn't matter anyway you merkins won't even make the 8....

The referring has been f**king terrible across the whole weekend. just what we have to accept this day and age, what ever team gets the rub of the green usually gets the win.. The actual players playing the game have less impact on the result then ever...

If a player is running north with the flight of the ball and gets a hand to it and knocks it south but not hard enough to change the direction of the ball then surely that is still a knock on despite the ball not actually changing direction.

Uh no, of course it isn't.
The ball has to go towards the opponent's try line from the point where it was touched.

The knock-on rule is black and white, unlike the forward pass rule which muddles things a bit

Then you need to focus on the direction in which the players hands face, their own goal line or the opposition's?
Then you have people 'facing backwards' who can still knock it forward purely down to the balls momentum and 'bounce of the ball'.

Think of cricket, a batter hitting the ball straight down the pitch, bowler reaches out and gets a finger to it and it goes into the stumps.
The ball was only ever going in one direction , it's speed and trajectory was merely altered (knock back).
Incredibly unlikely it goes forward then backwards again into the stumps (knock on).

For me, it's as simple as did the direction of the ball go towards the opposition try line at the point of the touch.
If you are lucky to get a finger to a ball that's speeding past you and it's a glance and no direction change, play on.

Refs being consistent is another thing.

Is it black and white? What is the wording? I've seen a million knock ons called that went backwards but the ref's claim that it was touched forward.

Wouldnt be surprised either way but always thought it was similar to the pass rule.

Based on that argument, if a player was standing 10m in front of a player kicking a low kick that would otherwise go thirty meters off the boot. And the player got his finger tips to the ball as it went past him, thus the ball only travelled 25m off the boot. The ball would thus land 15m behind the player who touched it, but according to you he would have "propelled" the ball forward 5m?
First and only post in 6 years. It’s quick thinking like this that will really freshen up the place. ;)

Gerard was the same ref the NRL was forced to drop after his blatantly bias performance in the Broncos v Titans finals game a couple years ago

He literally let Roberts kick a titans player in the back

What do you mean 'touched forward'? That means nothing.

If it is knocked forward towards the opponent's dead ball line it is a knock-on.

The actual wording in the NRL rule book is:
KNOCK-ON - means to knock the ball towards the opponents’ dead
ball line with hand or arm, while playing at the ball.
