Storm Salary Cap Issues

The following is from The Mole -

The Mole: Salary cap problems may force Storm to shed players

Who will Storm palm off?

The Storm have major salary cap problems leading into the new season and are attempting to offload three players to England before the start of the new season next month.

In a bid to balance the books, the club has told Super League clubs that giant prop Sam Kasiano, utility back Cheyse Blair and Tongan international Patrick Kaufusi are all available.

The re-signing of skipper Cameron Smith on huge dollars, as well as the retention of star players Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Jahrome Hughes, Felise Kaufusi and Curtis Scott, has left the Storm in a pickle.

A couple of English clubs have shown interest in the trio, but so far no deals have been done.

If the Storm can’t offload at least two of the three before the new season comes around, it will make life very difficult for their accountants.

Sorry to disappoint.

Melbourne has denied a report claiming the club is trying to offload three players to be salary cap compliant by Round 1.

Wide World Of Sports is reporting the Storm are shopping three players to English Super League clubs in a desperate bid to balance their books before the season kicks off in three weeks’ time.

The players named are veteran prop Sam Kasiano, journeyman back Cheyse Blair, and forward Patrick Kaufusi. The story claims at least two of the three players will need to be offloaded to get the club below the cap.

But the club told foxsports.com.au the story is not true and they are not worried about their salary cap position.

There’s a chance the current list could still change by Round 1, but only by one player at most.

With 29 players currently in their top squad, Melbourne would need to replace any player they culled immediately, given every club needs to have 29 registered by March 1.

If the Storm did make a list change it’s likely they would upgrade a development listed player to the top 30 squad.

Seems fair they are in cap trouble based on who they have bought this year and lost from last season, slight uplift in the salary cap as well. I'd like to see last years books.

Who's in?
2019: Marion Seve (Broncos)

Who's out?
2019: Tim Glasby (Knights), Ryley Jacks (Titans), Lachlan Timm (Dragons)
Retired: Billy Slater, Ryan Hoffman

They must have been to busy advising the NRL on what to do about JDB and forgot about their salary cap again.
