The difference in their defence from previous years is extreme. He has done something to get some serious fight in that team defensively.

Soward came from reserve grade at the dragons via a short stint for the mighty London broncos, Maloney was a journeyman barely established when he arrived at the warriors, on what planet is either of them comparable to a veteran brad fitler? What rubbish.

I’m not comparing them to Brad Fittlers talent, I’m pointing out that individual players can have a big impact on a teams performance.

Soward was huge for us in 2014, he was a big reason for the season we had.

Exactly - Also (not a popular opinion) but I think the addition of Ennis to the coaching staff has helped with some players finding good-great form

Far cry from predicting what the plan is for cleary after two more years of failure, and what he will be paid and who will replace him.... you’d have to be pretty bloody thick to take a comment like seriously.

Edit: 46 is his win rate with just the raiders I believe, not his career win rate.

I just thought it was ironic you’d accuse someone of pulling something out of their area and then in the very next post get a basic stat wrong.

Of course it’s possibly Cleary can still coach us to a grand final, but it’s unlikely.

Can the same be said for individual players having a negative impact on teams performance? The onus goes both ways and it's an amalgamation of factors imo - If a great coach has shit players, it won't always work - If a shit coach has great players, it won't always work - The trick is getting the balance between the 2.

Absolutely. But the coach has a big say in recruitment and retention.

Ennis was a pest but is a very intelligent footballer.

The warriors still had Maloney when they missed the 8 the year after making the GF, the year after Ivan left so by your logic that huge drop off is all due to Ivan leaving?

There are huge differences in the roosters situation when Ricky took over and the warriors/panthers in your other examples its comparing apples to bricks, IMO its a ridiculous comparison.

But all things being equal, key players can make a big impact to a club. I think quite clearly Soward demonstrated that in 2014.

The impact on its face wasn’t the same. Fittler took the roosters to 3 consecutive grand final, Soward took the panthers to a single preliminary final. But there was still a significant impact which can change a coaches fortune.

The comparison was never meant to be 100% like for like.

But with guys like Cleary you have 10+ years of info. Chance is less of an impact to an overall record over time. Yeah it might hit a season or three, but it hasn’t impacted all his coaching career.
