When asked on any up coming signings the same journo tweeted this.

There are a few irons in the fire.
They need a few releases first, they take time. A domino effect needs to happen over the next month or 2 to kick start it.
What the Sharks do to fit Ramien in will be interesting. They have so many variables at the moment.
The wildcard could be if Holmes comes back to the NRL.

They were wrong on the following.

Walker's re-signed. Twal extended, Marsters off to the Cowboys.
WW clarified a week later we were no longer in the hunt for Matterson.

Maybe our interest in the above was genuine, but the money wasn't right. I think the petulant Matterson may go to the highest bidder.

Next 6-8 weeks will be interesting.

I’m sure they’re wrong about a number of things, I was just making the point that the club being interested in Apisai wasn’t too secret.

Sure, but you specifically said halfback.

Teams I think can do well without a good halfback, but they need other good players.
Sorry Herbert but you mentioned halfbacks not me. I have followed this site for many years and have not bothered to get involved in the nitty gritty discussions that normally evolve here. I always appreciate your posts and some of the others, even though rose coloured glasses often descend from the cool position to the bridge of some peoples nose. 2020 will be the make or break of the Cleary dynasty.. Nathan will hopefully recover from any injury in enough time for a good pre-season and without any disturbance from off field misdemeanors they should have a good year. But I feel the family association will be detrimental to anyone of any substance coming to the club.

I hate to be a pedant , but...

Agree with your other comments though

Average, decent, good, excellent, all individual ratings depending on who's opinion it is. My personal opinion is Cleary doesn't get past the second comma. Townsend has been above the second comma since he signed with Cronulla.

He’s 21 years old mate. He’s achieved a lot for his age, but he has a ways to go.

maybe give him a minute or two.

You dont think setting a new points scoring record for the club bagging 4 tries in a match ranks above decent? Even if only for a moment?

Tough marker.

I'll agree it was a great effort, Newcastle were in for a hiding at the end of the year though. 34 points in that game and yet 122 points in his other 20 appearances doesn't make for great reading. I believe his tally would have been higher under any other coach of a team in and around the 8. The father/coach scenario will stifle his development because of internal and external pressures, and when his father/coach comes out with " I don't know" statements in press conferences, it sets off alarm bells as to his ability to being a first grade coach.

Focusing on the points Cleary scores is kinda missing the point.

No one doubts he’s an excellent goal kicker, he’s also very good for a half at scoring his own try.

The questions around Cleary have always been about his halfback play. His passing, creating tries for the backs, his in play kicking etc.

The main issue is a lack of creativity.

In relation to points he has scored, it was in response to a tagged comment regarding his points haul against Newcastle. Yes great achievement, but his results for the rest of the year weren't anything to get excited about. I totally agree with the other points you have made. The recruitment issues are deeper than his ability or contribution. My gripe is with the hiring of his dad as coach which probably contributed to the fall in form of some of the players who ended up leaving.

Cleary just got sick of his teammates butchering tries. Decided to do it all himself.

The Cleary game vs Newcastle can only be called a 10/10 game. Huge individual effort. If you watch the replay the Knights basically aren't trying. But you can't take away points because the opposition ain't that good. You just have to put that game in perspective.

There were 2-3 games in 2019 that were decided by his effort. Knights/Eels are the ones that come to mind.

Wasn't Nath also the NRL's highest point-scorer a year or two back?

And almost broke the record for most consecutive goals? (wasnt he close)

Was the half for NSW in 2 Winning Origin Series (yes i know he was injured last year)

Was 3 from 3 in Final series as our Halfback since making grade?

Most points scored by a Panther now also...

Not a bad resume..

There’s two Nathan Cleary’s

1. He’s a very good footballer, great goal kicker, excellent defender for a 7.

2. He’s not a creative half, rarely puts his outside backs into gaps, doesn’t create many tries from kicks.

The problem is point 2 is more important for someone who plays halfback.

Until he develops those facets of his game he’s always going to be seen critically by many as a halfback.
