Overs and Unders.

With all the constant talk around Ben Hunt and is he value for money etc it got me thinking about other teams and players who are currently on a fortune but simply don't deliver.
Personally I think Ben Hunt will always be remembered and then judged on the dropped ball in the Grand Final so their is always pressure applied since then.
Is Ben Hunt worth the $830,000 per year (not 1.2 million) that we are paying him.
Lets look around the grounds.
Josh Reynolds at Tigers.
Darius Boyd at the Donkeys.
Russell Packer at the Tigers.
Moses Mbye at the Tigers.
Jack Bird at the Donkeys.
Ash Tyaylor for the titans.
Bryce Cartwright at the Titans.
Josh Dugan at the Sharks.
Kieran Foran at the Dogs.
I could list another 20 names.
My question is who do you think is currently the most overpaid player currently and anyone from the past 20 years that stands out. From my list above Ben Hunt in my opinion is value compared to the others and what they get paid / bring to the team / brand.
(Yes if it was Coach as well we have an easy winner).

Dick Huddart. Worth 2 average priced houses in 1964-68. So nearly 2 mill a year at todays rate. Still don't know why Raper Gaz,Smithy etc didn't arc up but perhaps they were getting similar ? Geez we must have been worst than the rorters, although we were not breaking any rules ( other than the residential one in the early days ! )
Today, Hunt is providing more than Dugan, Taylor Foran, Bird, Packer & Cartwright & Boyd to start with.Melbourne, Rorters and to a lesser extent Souths at least get some value for their big signings but then again it must be due to the COACH !

That’s a good point. He’s actually a pretty solid player imo, he’s no Joey Johns but he’s all effort and a pretty gritty little bastard. His kicking game is actually improving too I reckon, there are times he has brain farts but his kicking game is definitely now better than when he was at the Broncs.

The trouble with your summation / challenge is the way some of the contracts are crafted and the fact that we don't know the real numbers.
Some are back ended so the money they're on at the end of their careers is not a true reflection of what they were worth when they were paid less when playing at their best.
Setting up a roster for a premiership window often means that you need many good players on less with a promise for more later.
Ask your self what was Boyd worth in 2010/11 and could we have afforded him if the he was paid his true worth?
DP mentioned Huddart which is quite true as we paid overs right up front for an ageing 2nd rower whose best was 5 years before.
Hunt for mine is certainly overs but is he the worst I doubt it.
Anasta would go a long way to being the most overrated in the last 20 years and was so judged by his peers.

l agree with your observation that Anasta has probably been the most overrated player to date.

l think Ben Hunt has played some great games for us but can only be rated as a good to very good player as opposed to being a great player.

Great players lead.
Most the time, Ben needs a leader to spark him into action. Widdop was that person.

The problem we now have is that Norman isn’t a leader either. Norman especially needs someone to set him up in a play.

One of them needs to step up.
Hope they prove me wrong this year.

I’d say Foran. Although I think it’s a shame. I always liked the way he played footy. Always committed the line and gave good ball to his outside men.

The Dogs really should have given careful consideration to the Forans injuries before giving him a big contract. His body just can’t handle the NRL and the way he plays the game.

Doesn’t matter how good you are if you can’t stay on the field.

In the context of what the halves market is worth these days, I don't think Hunt is overpaid. You also have to factor in the pretty desperate position we were in at the time we signed him, in the sense that we needed to pay high to attract anyone. We could have done much worse

As of now, I think Norman is the real overpaid half on our team, but that's based purely on his last two years. He has gotta step up this year. His 2019 season I'll chalk up to Mary's spine switching and his injury, which no doubt affected him. He did a lot of good when given consistent play time at 5/8. This year it's all his so pending injury he's got to own it now.

Out of the list provided Foran and Josh Reynolds (based on the amount of time they spend on the field) would be in the grand final.

Can't imagine why DCE gets a mention from anyone - always looks like he's putting in to me and along with the Turbo brothers, the main reason Manly are a shot at the top 4 this year.

Apparently Boyd re-signed but had a get out clause which was triggered once Bennett said adios.

Another discarded asapect of Hunt is that the last time Saints had a genuine, long term halfback was Noel Goldthorpe. If you query the largesse of Ben’s stipend, look no further.

Hey Jimmy just wanting to check on your Sailor to Brisbane move saying they needed a half as Milford was fullback. I think they’re looking pretty OK in the backs and halves with Milford and for depth. Yes I was wrong with Isaako being fullback but he was beaten by a bird that flew the coop. I think we need him as cover more than the Fri night specialists
