Seriously though if Whare retires they’ll find him a job if he wants it. Sounds like his family is settled down here so it would be nice to keep him around the club.

Part of Whare's deal was to mentor the Islander kids. Assuming lower grades are back he could do that.
Whether that is feasible depends what money he's on. Someone mentioned $450k, I don't believe that for one second, I'd expect closer to half that especially for five years. But if it is correct, it's an awful lot of cap to have sitting in reserve grade.

The 450k figure comes from what the telegraph published. It’s probably not correct, but it’s all we have to go on. I think 225k is a bit low, though, average NRL salary is 315k. I’d expect Whare would at least be in the 300k range somewhere.

James Hooper saying that Staines manager wants $2m for 4 years. That’s just silly.

Something around 900k for 3 years might be reasonable.

It's overs for sure, but if I'm the Dogs / Titans / Cowboys I honestly think I'm close to taking the punt. $500k a year likely isn't going to completely harpoon your cap management if it doesn't quite work out.

Hes worth a punt for a struggling club for sure imo, I wouldnt mind the panthers paying a little overs to keep him.

Locking him into a four year deal might not be the best move for him though, 500k is overs now but in two years he might easily demand a lot more if he kicks on from what he has shown so far.

It’s a big call when you haven’t seen him play fullback at FG level.

Cowboys don’t need him, though. They’ve got a potential star of their own at fullback. Will be dogs or tigers I think.

That young half who debuted against us(and scored under the posts) looks to another potential star for them imo he was super impressive. I dont see the cows coming after Staines, they have spent big money on Holmes, will need to spend big money to retain the hammer and they bought Marsters also this offseason.

Its the dogs who look desperate enough and have the cap to take a risk like that and maybe the tigers.

I just threw out the Cowboys name as a team struggling, but you're right Tigers would of been a better example.

Could be just a greedy agent talking him up. I imagine Penrith may have said look around, but if you haven't signed with us by !st November, look elsewhere...

I think the Cows have plenty of promising players all over the park. They are a wonderfully skilful team.

I'd just love a coach to say: 'This is a quick fix, top 4 this year'. You'd never hear it said publicly. Its always doom and gloom for obvious reasons, easiest way for a coach/board to get a stay of execution.

Some of my favourites:

'We need to re-build...it will take time'

'Its not my squad'

'Its going to take years to fix this salary cap mess'

'Its a young squad'

'We need time to let the spine gel'

'Get on the bus'

No way that happens though. He would get 'homesick' or something and upgrade the deal mid contract

$500k isn't overs based on his first 2 games and what Ponga managed to demand at the same point in his career.

Ponga got $650k after 2 games. I thought Knights were insane. By the end of that first season he looked like a bargain.

Now obviously Staines might not perform like that. But based on his first 2 games his debut was more impressive than Ponga and a $500k gamble seems pretty small for a desperate club to be honest.

We likely cant go close to matching that. Unfortunately. But there are a few average fullbacks running around and plenty of duds on a hell of a lot more than $500k.

Every club has promising backs especially FB. I just don't see why you would poach Staines for that price

Ponga was different. He was carving up in NYC then played a semi. I rate that untried FB the Dragons have over Staines

do you think? Most if not all his try’s have come because of a slick back line.
I doubt very much he has the same debut if he was on the end of the tigers or bulldogs back lines.

Ponga wasn’t paid off those two games, he was paid because he was a superstar at every level he played junior footy at. Both league and union.
