"Adelaide, we have a problem... "

With the Covid curveball in SA over the last 2 days - a lot of radio talk has focussed around the first test in Adelaide.

Not that the match won't proceed - but..

Unless SA can get local transmissions consistently back to Zero by early December (2nd or 3rd) - Players MAY have to quarantine when leaving for other states - ie Victoria.... for the boxing day test. And while Victoria isn't one of them (yet) some states have already shut their borders.

Throw India into the equation - needing to quarantine for 14 days on arrival to Australia, they'll be having absolutely no part of further quarantining in Australia across borders.

So far SA have done extremely well at squashing covid "clusters", and hopefully the same will happen again. But the next 3-4 days could effectively decide where the first test will be held.

Wouldn't be surprised Anastacia Palascak is gunning for it to return to Brisbane, and Perth licking their lips to come off the bench and host a test.

There are still quarantine requirements if entering WA from NSW or Victoria, which is where the ODI series is being played. So you can scratch Perth.

I'd imagine Canberra is a more likely fall-back option.

If things stay as they are that is due to change on Dec 5 and Nov 27 respectively so Perth could be an option.

Possibly.

However I can now envisage Brisbane getting the first test now given..
  • They've opened the gates to a fullhouse for tonight's Origin match.
  • Cricket Australia will be gagging for every dollar they can get..
  • South Australia has gone into full lockdown for the next 6 days.
Brissy hasn't been historically a great turnstile-turner at the Gabba for test cricket - but Adelaide might have absolutely zero crowds imposed on it, if it can proceed at all.

Of all the cities scheduled to host a test this summer - Adelaide is now the one that is the biggest risk for crowds / revenue.

We've had this virus nailed for so long - and then this happens.... FFS!

There is probably some logic in making the call early and just swapping the tests?

GABBA goes first and Adelaide Oval last.
