Greg “Brandy” Alexander has expressed why he believes Matt Burton will stay at the Penrith Panthers.

In an interview on SEN 1170’s Morning Glory with Matty Johns, the Panthers great addressed the rumours of the young talent wanting to leave the club for the Canterbury Bulldogs.

“I think the public pressure and the pressure from the Dogs through the media is trying to unsettle Matt,” he said.

“It is an emotional issue when you’re talking about a young player, who perhaps wants to move on but he’s given no indication at training.

“I think the Dogs and Dave Riolo (Burton's manager) have thought: 'We’ll get him out of here before the season starts'.

“Now it’s only a month away it doesn’t look like Matt is going to be released.
Matt Burton has class, he’s not dragging his feet kicking stones at training.

“He might want to go to the Dogs but he hasn’t given that indication through the way he’s training at Penrith.”

Andrew Webster stated that he spoke to Penrith CEO Brian Fletcher and he said: “There is absolutely no way that Burton is leaving this club.”

However, Burton’s agent David Riolo recently called on the Panthers to immediately release the young playmaker to Canterbury.

Riolo wants to bring the deal forward by a year as he believes Burton won’t get enough opportunities in the first grade this season.

“He’s surplus to Penrith’s 17 and their top team, and I think it would be a shame to see someone of his talent spent another year playing in the Cup (Under-20s),” Rioli told SEN 1170's Mornings with Matt White earlier this week.

Alexander explained what a crucial role Burton could have with the Panthers provided he stays put.

“If (Nathan) Cleary goes down, Matt Burton will be the halfback,” he said.

“He’s such an important player even though he’s not in the starting 17.

“He very well could be at some stage in the year.”

After an injury-interrupted 2020, Brandy laid out Burton’s role in this Penrith squad.

“If something happens Matt Burton is there,” he added.

“There's cover for Jarome Luai, Tyrone May can play five-eighth. But there's no one really there to play halfback and Matt Burton could do that.”

Have you gone cold on Brown? I’ve thought he looks bloody good for a 20 year old half pretty much every game.

I’d be more convinced by their rebuild if the organisation wasn’t such a shambles. I don’t think they have the pack to make the 8 even next year. Pretty good backline and halves yeah but only 4 good forwards. Not what you want 2 rookie halves playing behind. If you could back Dogs management to be patient like Penrith, Newcastle and Canberra have been, and they can make some astute forward signings, maybe 2023 they are a top 8 side.

Browns is solid. But he is apparently now on 600k or there about. Unsure he offered much more then W.Smith. Plenty of potential but be compensated for that.

NRL 2021: Panthers star Stephen Crichton to re-sign with Penrith
Penrith have got their man, fighting off a host of NRL rivals to secure the code’s hottest centre prospect on a multimillion-dollar deal.

Peter Badel

Penrith have staved off big-money poaching attempts from seven NRL rivals to secure boom centre Stephen Crichton in a $1.7 million contract coup for the NRL grand finalists.

News Corp can reveal Crichton, the code’s hottest centre prospect alongside Brisbane ace Kotoni Staggs, is staying loyal with the NSW Origin hopeful to remain at Penrith until the end of 2023.

Crichton’s management and the Panthers are in the advanced stages of negotiations with the 20-year-old to formally ink his new Penrith deal next week.

The classy centre is off-contract at season’s end, but Crichton will receive an upgrade to his salary for this season, plus a two-year extension worth around $650,000 a season.

The quick-stepping Crichton had a breakout 2020 campaign, scoring 17 tries from 22 games in Penrith’s charge to the decider, and his sizzling form attracting interest from almost half the NRL premiership.

The Wests Tigers and Bulldogs were particularly keen to snare Crichton, who was added to the extended NSW Origin squad last season after his backline brilliance helped propel Penrith to the NRL decider.

Just a month after Penrith’s grand-final loss to Melbourne, Crichton indicated he was in no rush to sort out his future amid fears he could subject Penrith to a bidding war for his services.

But the Panthers have got their man, with the parties putting finishing touches on the deal with a view to announcing Crichton’s re-signing next week.

It is a significant retention boon for the Panthers, who are banking on their slew of young guns headlined by Crichton, Nathan Cleary and Jerome Luai to take Penrith to the club’s third premiership this season.

The lucrative upgrade has installed Crichton among the code’s highest-paid centres alongside Roosters premiership strike weapon Joseph Manu, Tigers’ BJ Leilua, Souths’ Dane Gagai and Canberra skipper Jarrod Croker.

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary recently told News Corp he had no plans to lose Crichton.

“It has been a bit of a process since the grand final but we are almost there,” Cleary said.

“It (managing the roster) has been a challenge for us after a successful year that came as a bit of a surprise, but we are confident that he won’t be going anywhere.”

I reckon Burton is on maybe 150k this season. 180k at the most.
Dogs would be saying we will bump you to 450k a season. Or maybe even 500k.
Do you reckon during negotiations they let him know this? He signs for 600k x 3yrs with players option on 3rd. But they say we will pressure them to release early and if do which we will force a player swap we will pay you 500k for 2021.....

It opens the door for future juniors your produce. Oh they let Burton go. He got an extra 350k by getting an early release. We will get you one. But shut the door and this ACE is removed from oppositions negotiating power.

I'd be very dissaapointed if release him.And as I said prior Burton may of not rushed to sign with anyone had the potential till release card been thrown. He could of waited till mid season.

$650k is less than most reports which is good.

Whilst this is great news and all, why didn’t Panthers Media announce it first?
