The NRL has banned Joseph "BJ" Leilua for the first four rounds of next season just days after he was sacked by the Sydney Roosters for texting a nude photo of his ex-girlfriend.
Newcastle this week signed the utility for next season after the Roosters dumped the utility despite being found not guilty on October 24 of assaulting his former girlfriend in an incident in May this year.
However, he was placed on a one-year good behaviour bond for sending a naked photo of the woman to two other people -- one being the woman's brother.
The NRL waited for the legal action to finish and for the Roosters to finalise their penalties before reviewing the case.
"No matter if the player had stayed at the Roosters or gone to another club, we believe the original act (distributing the photo), now proven in court, warrants the player being stood out of the game for some period," NRL interim chief executive Shane Mattiske said yesterday.
"The matter proven in court is one that nobody can or should support. Respectful relationships and the dangers of misusing social media are key elements of our education programs and BJ has been a part of those programs."
Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan said the club had not asked the NRL to take any further action against Leilua despite the player signing immediately with the Knights.
"We submitted a report to the NRL but we hadn't spoken to them about it. That's a decision that has rested with other people," Canavan said.
Knights chief executive Matt Gidley could not be contacted.
Anything he says on the May situation is irrelevant given his support of the Tigers during BJ's tenure. 2 years of a bloke that sent intimate images as revenge, designed to intentionally hurt his victim. And not a peep from him about his club signing such an offender.
Ignore the bullshit and he will get bored quickly. He will pretend not to see this post as whenever BJ's sending of revenge porn is mentioned he changes the subject.
