Good morning everyone! And what a glorious morning it is today as the Charity Shield game day is finally here!!! It's been a long Off-Season and it was great to see the Red and Green back out there last week but this is always the one you really wait for, the official unofficial start to the Season! We take on our old rival the Dragons tonight in what should be a cracker of a contest. We have a lot of history with St George Illawarra, a history which stretches back over 100 years now, and although we perhaps don't hate them like we hate the Roosters, I think I can speak for a lot of Souths fans when I say I certainly don't like them. The feeling is there. So a lot of history and this one and the traditional Charity Shield fixture is always a highlight.

Yes, it's officially classed as a trial match but I think we all know, this ain't just a trial. It's the Charity Shield and there's silverware on the line. It means something and the result matters. We are gunning to retain the shield for an incredible 10th time in a row. Whether we can do it or not remains to be seen.

It's not going to be easy tonight that's one thing I do know. In fact, I feel like this year's Charity Shield is going to be tougher than previous years. In the past we've made it look easy but I certainly don't think that's going to be the case tonight. Not just because of the players we've lost, but because this Dragons side is a lot stronger and more settled than years gone by. It's a trial so always tough to know what to expect but I'm expecting them to come out firing and really make us work so we're going to have to be on our game. Limiting their big forwards is priority number one. From there we really need to keep our eyes on guys like Lomax, Sullivan and Sloan in particular.

I'm sure our boys are going to be extremely fired up for this one too. That Grand Final loss has burned all Pre-Season and for most of those players, this is the first chance they get to put that fire in the belly form last years defeat into practice. I really can't wait to see a near full-strength side trot out there today! We're missing Trell and Captain Cam but that's about it. I said the Dragons would be tough be we should prove a huge challenge for them too! Particularly looking forward to seeing how Lachie goes with the stars around him, how Cody's role has changed with more responsibility and also the left centre battle between Jaxson and Josiah. It's the first game back so I'm not expecting a perfect performance but it'd be good to show some signs and get the result.

Always love the Charity Shield! I'm so pumped and soooo ready!! let's get out there and put on a show for Mudgee!!!

Well here we are it’s that time of year again the time of year we all love and what we’ve been waiting for for quite a while now yes it’s Charity Shield time of year again as we do battle with fierce rivals the Dragons and look to make it our 10th Charity Shield victory in a row. It’s been great to see our boys out and about in Mudgee this week getting involved in the community. Both sets of fan bases have lots of members and fans out Mudgee way and once again tonight will be a sell out which is gonna be great despite the threat of rain around.

Well for us it’ll all be about building our combos it’s our first look at Cody and Ilias combo after all their hard work over pre season. Ta’affe will get an opportunity to blow out the cobwebs at FB before round 1, young Jaxson gets the chance to improve on last week and make that centre spot his own. Yes we are missing Murray and Trell but apart from that it’s close to full strength. I’m looking forward to watching Jai start in the second row and watching Sele who can have a big year I hope we just need his body to hold up. Then we have the battle of Tom v George I can’t wait. In the second half it’ll be an opportunity for us to give some younger guys and fringe first graders a go so we will get another good look at Hawkins too, Karipani, Kalokalo and Moale etc..... also our first look at Chee Kam and Havili in Cardinal and Myrtle is very exciting. For the Dragons they look a bit better on paper this year they have a strong pack as we know, Hunt will be looking to have a big year no doubt and Lomax and Suli are dangerous at centre as is the youth of Sloan at the back so it promises to be a very good encounter.

So lets get right behind the boys for our last hit out before round 1 as we look to iron out any chinks and rust in our game and build those combinations more. Lets bring home that Charity Shield once more and make it 10 in a row. I’m sure we will see plenty of Red and Green out at Mudgee getting that South Sydney chant going! So Rabbitohs members and supporters it’s once again time to FFFIIRRREEE UUUUPPPPP!!!

SO WHEN IT COMES TO 6:59PM TONIGHT ITS TIME TO GET ON YOUR FEEEEEETTTTT!! CLAP YOUR HANDS SHOW THE COLOURS STAMP YOUR FEET SCREAM YOUR LUNGS OUT HERE THEY COME YOUR SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS!!

GGOOOOOO SOUTH SYDNEY

GOOOOOOO SOUTH SYDNEY

WALKING ALONG SINGING A SONG SINGING GLORY GLORY GLORY ALL THE WAY!!!

LETS GO RABBITOHS!!!

St George appear a stronger, more balanced side. They could have a good season. Conversely, I'm unsure about Demetriou: following behind an absolute legendary coach is never easy. I have greater faith in Hornby his influence has rocketed the offense to new elite heights. Taane Milne should be one of starting centres, he looked better the more he played last season.

Taane Milne to start next to Graham and Karapani to be groomed as an impending starter for say 2 months? How does this backline appear?
Latrell
Alex
T. Milne
Stretch
Paulo
Walker
Ilias.
Personally I would not have Mansour. The alternate would be Karapani in the centres and Milne in place of Paulo. Who likes this?

We are about to witness just how great Bennett is. Three consecutive Finals appearances and a GF defeat by a short Half-Head minus one of the NRL's top three elite players and on the back of an interception which if not successful could have put us in front. Certainly, Bennett took some beltings [0-50, 12-56] however he always seems to find a way to bounce back.

I'm not sure that Taane is fast enough for centre or wing?

There's differing opinions on Hawkins, some think he's OK but others don't.
.
I haven’t seen much in him at this stage tbh.

he is young and remember he hasn’t really played for 2 years due to covid.

last game he kicked a monster from about the 30m out and nearly got a 40-20. Regular game play will do him good and I will reserve my judgment until alittle longer in the season

Not too far away from kick off so it's time to fire up everyone!!! On your feet!!

The official, unofficial start to the Season and this is going to be one of the most interesting Charity Shields to date so enjoy it!!

The Lachlan Ilias era is about to get underway! Let's hope it's a long and glorious one!

First proper hit out of the year, let's go and get these Dragons!!

We have issues in the backs Paulo and Mansour no surprise.

Ilias looking good considering he hasn’t played much last two years just he’s coming in too much in defence he must slide better.

Demetriou will obviously select a different backline for Rd 1. Mansour out, Paulo back to flank and Milne or Karapani as centre. Perhaps try Chee-Kam there too he is vastly experienced and can score. I could never understand why the club signed Mansour, he is a total waste.
