NRL2 Second Division

Stan Sport needs content. If the deal with Rugby Australia -- which is $33 a year -- isn't renewed after its conclusion in 2023, they might benefit from that money to invest in a national second tier competition and Test football to tie in to their three weekly NRL games on Ch9.

That leaves all of Saturday, Sunday 2pm and 6pm as viable timeslots for a second division that's exclusive on Stan Sport and competes with Foxtel's exclusive games.

With five time slots available they could have a ten team competition. If they include 6pm Fri then they have enough room for twelve teams. For $33M a year they could run a ten team competition with a $3.3M salary cap. Potential locations include Cairns, Mackay, Rockhampton, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Brisbane / Logan, Central Coast, North Sydney, Perth and Adelaide.

Cairns Cyclones @ Cairns
Mackay Cutters @ Mackay
Central Queensland Capras
Ipswich Jets @ Ipswich
Brisbane Tigers @ Coorparoo or Logan Magpies @ Meakin Park
Sunshine Coast Falcons @ Sunshine Coast
North Sydney Bears @ NSO
Central Coast RLFC @ Gosford
West Coast Pirates @ Perth Oval
Adelaide Rams @ Hindmarsh Stadium

I would go with

NRL 2 north-west
NRL 2 south-east

Might as well call them Qld and NSW Cup

Without NRL contracted 30+6 players and NRL clubs cannot play

Salary Cap of $1 mil

Perth & Darwin joins NRL north-west

Adelaide, New England, NSW North Coast, Western Div, Riverina, Albury, Central Coast join Norths, Newtown, Wenty, Blacktown, St Marys, Mounties

Wasn’t there talk of a summer league? It’d have to be Nines, you couldn’t play 80’ of RL in BBL weather

I assume 2nd division isn’t a P/R type thing but could always be where future clubs are selected from, be it expansion or filling in for clubs going bust

There is a 2nd tier comps run now in QLD and NSW.

Why would adding a Perth and Wellington team suddenly mean people would flock to see this level? Why don't those clubs just join those comps now?

The Australian sports market is to saturated to create a loss making endeavour like this.

Exactly. I don’t believe in the idea of a soccer like second division - I would refine it along the lines of a minor league setup like Baseball for example.

Just have the QLD Cup and the NSW Cup as they are, add the Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne, PNG, Fiji, a couple of NZ sides some country sides etc, assign them to whichever division or Cup they want and they could have a Super Bowl style final series at the end. Just eliminate any reference to the current NRL in these competitions.

It does nothing because nobody gives a f about 2nd division. You think NRL gets little coverage in afl wait till 2nd division.
PNG & Fiji is pathway because ppl actually play game there. Adelaide & Perth will just be full of kiwi's & Queenslander.
Tv will not pay for 2nd division. Nine will not put product on in afl states. Storm barely on nine now.
It will never happen because there's no money in it & ur just mentally masturbating about NRL teams on map..

Channel Nine play what 3 games a week. You keep referencing Channel Nine thinking that they are the important player in all of this - PayTV and streaming are the important player in all of this as they are the ones currently showing any second grade competition.

And yet I’ve shown fans will turn out for games when it’s there only option. Reds in the jim beam cup, Newtown when they make a day of it. Some qrl cup teams .
Sure might be 3-4k but that’s 3-4k rl fans who are currently not engaged with the game beyond their tv‘s. If tv will pay for Aleague and union, both which draw 60k audiences, then why wouldnt someone pay for a second division that would draw a similar audience?
without pathways perth and Adelaide never will, but guess what with a ft pathway they could eventually. We’ve supplied 30 plus players to nsw and qlnd cup in recent years out of the Perth system.
a second division could easily be as big as Aleague or basketball prof leagues.
some people have such little belief in our great game.

Do you think rebranding them would suddenly create great interest? Or are you saying that these levels should just get more funding?

You said yourself that WA used to get 3 to 4k to a game, so why would you spend another $100M to achieve the same outcome?
I think having a genuine competition, not a false comp heavily influenced by nrl reserve grade players, would create a stronger following, yes. Ask Bears fans if they’d rather watch a roosters reserve grade side or a genuine bears club playing in a genuine comp,

Didn't you suggest PNG being feeder for Perth team?! Now they going to fill their own local team - sure. Like I said will be full of kiwi's & Queenslanders.

Building league expecting crowds of 3k & TV ratings of 60k is pretty dumb. Means will never break even

Don't these comps exist right now, but don't meet your lofty standards of "genuine"? And by doing so it would suddenly outdraw every winter sport in Australia outside of NRL and AFL? And be worth millions in TV rights?

Isn't this is just an elaborate wish fantasy to get what you want, a local NRL team.

Great, how much is current deal?!

You mean how much of it is coming from PayTV? They paid about double of what Nine did.

If there are going to be any significant increases, it is more likely to come from PayTV or subscription services because a) they have greater money and b) they have greater need for the content.

omthey don’t, what we have now is meaningless conos designed to be a pseudo reserve these for nrl. Results are heavily influenced by whose got nrl club relationships as is recruitment. Hence why interest is minimal.
