Moving the Grand Final

To try and remove it from the stadium thread thought it was worthy of one on its own.

So we have Vlandys day 1 saying anything is on table and they will look at moving this years, day 2 he cools on that and suggests it might impact the agreement that still exists and give NSW a Legal out on that agreement, day 3 he cools even more and suggests we shouldn't punish NSW fans for their govts actions. Think its safe to say its going nowhere this year, but what after?

From Wednesday:
Sydney is on the brink of losing the NRL Grand Final after the NSW Government reportedly walked away from a $800 million pledge.
“We are in delicate negotiations with the NSW government,” V’landys said.
“All options will be on the table if these negotiations fail.”

Sports Minister Stuart Ayres however applied the blowtorch back on the NRL when he addressed the media on Tuesday.
“If the NRL took the grand final away from Sydney, after the NSW government has spent in excess of one and a half-billion dollars on sporting infrastructure that massively benefits the NRL … that would be an extraordinary move,” Ayres said.
In 2018, under the then leadership of Gladys Berejiklian, the NRL grand final would remain in Sydney until 2042 on the proviso the Olympic venue would receive an $800m upgrade.

NSW Sports Minister Stuart Ayres says it would be "extraordinary" for the NRL grand final to be moved from Sydney over a row about upgrades to suburban stadiums.
Mr Ayres, speaking from the rebuilt Sydney Football Stadium on Tuesday, said the government had spent more than $1.5 billion on sporting infrastructure since 2014.

That figure includes the $828 million redevelopment at Moore Park, the $300 million CommBank Stadium at Parramatta and funds for ground upgrades, he said.

He said projects such as those "massively benefits the NRL", and he was sure the grand final would stay in Sydney.

"I think if the NRL walked away from the home of its sport here in NSW, the state that the grand final has always been played in, with the exception of the COVID grand final from last year, that would be an extraordinary move," Mr Ayres said.
It is understood Mr V'landys used the threat of moving the NRL's decider interstate as a bargaining chip during a meeting with the government in April.

Asked when leaving that meeting if the grand final would stay in Sydney, he said: "At this stage, yes."

There has only been one year when the premiership was not settled in Sydney — that came in 2021 when the game was moved to Brisbane due to COVID-19 restrictions in NSW.

Vlad starts the backflip yesterday:

ARLC boss Peter V'landys said that a decision was yet to be made about where this year's NRL grand final will be played, as his war of words with NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet rolls on.

While V'landys has repeatedly hinted at the grand final being moved to Queensland in retaliation for the NSW government's change of heart on stadium renovations at Cronulla, Leichhardt, and Brookvale, he seemed to walk back those comments slightly when asked about the threat this morning.

"The options will be looked at but we can't punish the people of NSW because of the integrity of the NSW government," he said on Nine's Today.
"They've had two very hard years. We haven't played the grand final here last year or the State of Origin."

V'landys said he needed "time to think" about the sport's next move.

"The last thing we want to do is punish them, punish the people of NSW because of the lack of integrity of the NSW government."
He said that a decision was likely to come by next week.

"If it stays in NSW, we need to make the decision quickly and get the tickets available for sale," he said.

For all these threats of moving the GF if NSW doesn’t pay another $500-1000m towards new stadiums….. are PVL and the stooges asking for similar commitments from the states they would be giving the GF to?

The NSW government could pull all stadium funding then just bid $1 more than whatever the other states are offering for the GF and the NRL would have to cop it sweet.

That is my question with it all. Why is it Stadiums to host it in NSW but another state can pay x amount and can host it

I guess the NRL sees value in the stadiums and therefore if no stadiums they want to get value out of the GF instead. The GF was locked in for 25 years. If it can realise $5-10mill a year its worth up to $125-250million. Best way to sell this to Sydney RL fans is to say they are going to use the money to build an NRL stadium in Sydney (be that South for Dragons and Sharks, or SW for Dogs and Tigers) , or if they are stupid to refurb suburban dumps.

Other alternative is to use it to get Govts to build in other states. So Queensland can have the GF for X amount of years if they build Dolphins a stadium and WA can have it for x amount of years if they finish off, or even better build a new, stadium in Perth ready for Pirates admission in 2026. Sydney can have it for X amount of years if they do something, Vic just have to pay for it as they are sorted.

That sucks for the sydney clubs still without decent venues but thats on their Govt. and their refusal to move with the times, it could actually end up being a very good outcome for the game by the end of it.

oh what utter clap trap

who's asking QLD for any new stadiums ?
Vic ?
SA ?
WA ?

& ..... cop it sweet with $1 more then other states bid for the GF ?
🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

They don't have to cop anything
the NSW govt could offer double what Vic does & the NRL is free to tell peritot to stick their bid up their asses .... through spite

Just like that four eyed wanker Peritot doesn't answer to the NRL
the NRL is not beholden to the highest bid , & is free to hold their GF anywhere they want at any price bid

i don’t imagine the clubs who elect PVL would be too happy accepting less money out of “spite”.

I would also not see the RLPA being happy to see a reduced salary cap out of “spite”

This is extra revenue not currently received. If they sold it for only $1mill, it’s still $1mill more than they are getting at the moment.

NSW are paying $10m for it now. With the $15m gate takings, You are starting at needing $25m to move it. Whatever else less the sponsors would pay too

Are they? I don’t think they were paying anything as they were building the stadiums? Tickets they can sell more at mcg and for more at optus and Suncorp. Won’t need firesales at those stadiums

you mean the clubs in sydney that have been screwed with a renege on the stadium deal by peritot , yea nah
they'll be fine

& you seem to be confusing our sport , ya know .. the one that banks 50 million profits off the back of covid , with another one that has financial issues & can't afford to take its GF for any price , any f**king where it wants

time for some spite !!

Yeah the one Greenberg signed. Was $10m a year
$15m for the 2 years it was at SFS while Accor was getting built. To cover the loss in ticket sales

Well if those States can justify the $25m fee then start the conversation, Until then it is a dumb move

Then 2 things happen.

Either those stadiums are blocked off to RL
or the hire fees are just enormous that NRL clubs can't afford them.

You really have no idea about most topics around here
