Good halves have a “basket of skills” not just speed:

Exhibit A, B, C and D=

Ben Hunt, Adam Reynolds, DCE and post-injury Cleary.

And E is Cody Walker. Cody has enchanting hands and feet.

They are all competent, game changing and brilliant players in their own right.
DCE is a hack, dumbest c.u.n.t ever...
The others are really good, i'd swap dce for Jerome Hughes

I must have missed something, I havent heard of this before but just realised he's not listed in the 2023 squad.

BULLDOGS SIGN SAMOAN CUP STAR

Samoan international Fa’amanu Brown looks likely to return to the Bulldogs four years after finishing with the club when he thought his NRL career was over.

Brown has agreed to a 12-month contract with Canterbury after this year resurrecting his career with the Tigers, having featured in 13 games.

To be fair, barring injury, he’s unlikely to get much game time here. Simpkin now in the box seat as 1st reserve? Loyalty is dead these days.

He’s a very well paid hack SmugaB and has enormous influence at Manly and is a rep player.

My point is that he’s slower than a stoned earthworm.

Perhaps of all nrl halves, there’s an argument that slow and careful beats out speed and nervous trying friskiness. It’s like a goldfish struggling to breathe when somethings wrong. It’s tough to watch.

That’s a vote for Jackson Hastings.

The other key half attribute is footy intelligence.

That’s the great tragedy of halves, as time goes on they usually get smarter but the old body slows down and they have performance issues.

Brooksys zenith belongs to a past era. “Pre-smug” I’ll call it to help you pinpoint the era.

You ask buddy @Eelementary, how draining it was to watch Brett Kenny lose his spark.

An unofficial immortal, one of the greatest of all time, spent 5 plus years dying as a footy player.

It was agony for everyone who had the benefit of seeing him play at the top.

Brooks is the same in the decline sense.

Brooks doesn’t belong in the same conversation as Kenny?

Sometimes one has take these risks in life.

It reflects very poorly on me, I agree.

There’s that famous footage of Kenny slamming the ball down after he’d dropped it cold in his last season.

Like seeing a car crash.

A mates brother who played in his era (as a forward for smug) said he was the greatest of all time after Churchill.

I never saw Churchill but Burt was my all time favourite player.Myself & most of my mates growing up worshipped him & none of us were Parra fans which demonstrates how sublime he was.

Yeah, now thinking about it, Sterlo wasn’t that fast either.

Sterlo once said Steve Mortimer was the better player and Turvey said Sterlo was. Very honourable, you won’t get that with your marquee these days. Teddy can’t even say sorry

Thinking of Mortimer and I will have to make a concession here to Brooksy, my recollection is that he was quite quick.

They were both valiant defenders and both had the ball on a string.

In the day, my heart said Sterlo, but my head said Turvey. Worth the price of admission just to see them face off. Cunning, brave and gifted.

Ancestors of Cleary but without the character defects.

The days of the brilliant and evergreen halves are over. Even Cleary has had to adjust since his operation. He’s still unbelievably good at 90% though. He used to be crazy for the ruck and scrimmage, but he seems a bit more composed and controlled now. @MugaB might have some better insights on that. Just my impression.

I hear Turvey is unwell, I wish him all good things.

Andrew Johns on Luke Brooks

And while Johns is rapt with the acquisition of Hastings, he concedes there is a sense of disappointment around the Brooks situation.

"It is disappointing because I think the change would have been good for Luke, everyone can see the pressure he's been under," Johns told Wide World of Sports.

"But now with Benji (Marshall) and Tim Sheens (coaching the Tigers), they are both very attack-minded coaches, I think they will improve him no end.

I know all you die hard Brooks bashers will say I'm crazy but I agree with Joey. By the way Brad Fittler is sitting alongside Johns and nodding in agreement to everything he says.

So we put him under more pressure Ned.

I agree, the change would have been good for all. Especially us.

The Tigers had originally refused to release Brooks, but the Sydney Morning Herald reportsthe reason a deal was unable to be struck this time around was the $1 million salary linked to Brooks for the new pay period.

So it was probably just about money, that’s footy, unhappy, I have no choice, but to move on?

Another botched opportunity, unless the miracle of a Brooks second coming eventuates.

Id feel better if he did something for the club and moderated his outrageous salary.

Take a page out of the book of Cameron Murray or a Dylan Edwards, both of whom have enjoyed finals riches.

No one would have any issues with him at all if he charged what we was worth. It would be a surrender from me.

But…yet another snout.
