More than the NRL can bear
Those pushing the story that Channel Seven will take over as the NRL free-to-air broadcaster have gone awfully quiet this week.

To suggest that the Seven Network will buy State of Origin is also ridiculous, because there is no way Nine would want the NRL rights without its most significant add-ons: Origin and the finals series.

Interesting that you have been more bullish than ever this week about Channel 7 ?

I think I literally said the same thing about 7 getting the Origin rights as a stand alone or even with the Test matches that you think is some hope..…zero chance that happens for obvious reasons…

I think they should tell old mate at Channel 7 to take a jump Into whatever the closest lake is to Perth after his newspaper’s campaign against the Bears

I’ll also say this …if the only two markets with a genuine interest are Nine/stan and DAZN, they will be lucky to get $500m a year and maybe less …$600m is a pipe dream …

I’m really hoping that a credible third option is still out there …

Good luck, that barely happens in Melbourne after 30 years of having a team
Correct.
Noted today the ABC Offsiders based in Melbourne with zero journos interested in the NRL , gave 2 minutes of time to the NRL with no mention of the Bears announcement.
The Vic media (AFL boot licking) do their best to avoid giving anytime airtime to the NRL. Fear does that.CH9 Victoria is part of that cabal.

I am confident they will get at least $500 million, with two extra teams and hopefully some bidding tension. If NRL goes with Nine/Stan, that will be massive. If they also get the EPL and formula one, then they will have a sports subscription package that goes for the whole year and not just seven months.

The concern I have is Ten/Paramount. Are they viable, or will they ever be viable to bid for major sports rights.

I posted an article a week or so ago (think on this thread) that said a third network had lodged interest to bid

And now Pvl and abdo are taking the owner of channel seven to dinner when he’s been bagging them for a week

Stokes can see the fta ratings

If nrl wants to be the dominant Australian sport it needs all networks bidding which afl do get

When you include origin and other rep games Nine gets the rights for a very good value

Seven are paying around 170 million for the afl tv rights

Nrl games are regularly beating them(before Perth nrl team will give a nice bump) plus origin

I don’t expect him to be a serious player this time even for origin he will lodge a nuisance bid which won’t be close to what’s needed

And Pvl is a businessman he won’t be annoying stokes when he can be a future rights holder

The issue is though that Stokes can admire the NRL ratings, but he has no capacity to be able to show the games even if he genuinely wanted to when they compete against the AFL at the same time …this doesn’t even account for the money he is currently bleeding … any other bidder would see straight through him as not a credible threat ..

I’m not going to argue with you that Nine gets tremendous “value” out of the NRL… who is to blame there though? The last TV deal is the biggest mistake the NRL has made under PVLs management

I have a major concern that the FTA money component of the deal won’t change a lot…unless one of the other networks wants to introduce Monday night football or something…. Seems nothing being mentioned in the media about that…

Let’s hope that there is a third player because I think that’s the only way they can get a good deal ..unless nine and DAZN both want to go to war and not just be happy with the status quo

Afl can be shown on minor channels in nrl states (think it already is) whilst nrl is on the main channels

And I didn’t say I think he will necessarily bid for the nrl club rights this time

He’s strapped financially unlike nine

A bid of 75 to 100 million for origin though ?

That’s a game changer

Nrl pays around 120 million now for everything including origin

And there is no chance seven walks away with Origin only …. If I’m nine I’m making the FTA offer for the.NRL conditional that they retain the Origin games …the NRL is snookered on this it seems without another credible FTA option

If seven makes a blockbuster bid for origin sure it puts pressure on nine

That’s the jewel in the crown

Nine always puts in bids that include origin lol

This is all about building competitive tension

The real battle is Stan v Fox but seven bidding for origin helps put pressure on nine for the fta rights

And the pacific cup fta rights could be seperate to the club game

Seven definitely wants to bid for the Pacific cup and rlwc together with Fox

Pacific cup is worth FA right now …and I’m saying again that Nine will offer one price for FTA including Origin and the NRL games and they will have to take it regardless what 7 offer for Origin …

We all want to hope that Nine want all the games … that’s the only apparent path to a big payday now …how much money does 9 have left after chasing F1 and EPL as well?

Hasnt the NRL already confirmed in recent times that the rights can/will be broken into packages Club/Origin-Tests/Finals ?

PVL has said that he is mindful about not spreading the coverage over multiple platforms … as it costs too much money for the punters

Yep. But I took that to mean he didnt want multiple streaming packages subscription fees rather than it relating to FTA providers like 7 & 9.

True, he definitely has fault in this. But how did our esteemed partners respond to the gesture when they were on their feet again? By handing bucket loads of money to our rivals. Fair enough, business is business, but Fox needs the NRL and Vlandys seems like the kind of guy to hold a grudge.

Hope Fox/Dazn miss out on the NRL this time round and they and the AFL suffer badly for it.

Why not have two Free To Air FTA Ten/paramount Friday 6pm and 2Pm Sunday
Nine 8pm Friday and 4pm Sunday.
Find some arrangement for SOS and Grand Final, charge both $100m Plus then ask $350m for Fox/Kayo that's $550m to $600m, without trying too hard.
Substitute Channel 7 for 10/paramount if 10 don't want to play

Well…is there another genuine option for FTA ? Seven doesn’t have the money, nor do I think they want to use their multiple channels broadcasting the two games at the same time …Is Ten an option ? I thought they were considered not to have interest

Sure....10 is questionable.

But the suggestion was from WB1234 that 7 could buy the Origin package as a standalone & I dont see any real obstacles to that. I dont believe Stokes doesnt have the ability or rescources to bid as suggested & that is wether or not 10 involve themselves.

To your second point, what 2 game broadcast at the same time ? Origin wont conflict with any AFL games.

Why would anyone put soo much stock into what that shill weedler says? He talks the nrl down & runs the nine party line every time the rights are up for negotiation. Of course nine will play down the involvement of other bidders, seven may not have any intention of winning the rights, doesn’t stop them driving the price up for nine, as nine did with the afl.
