Ryles was all but signed wasn't he? I heard it was the contract amount that was the problem and they agreed to a figure but when he came to sign the deal it was less? Young already had a job up north, Flanno wanted Young to join his staff he speaks highly of him.
Wasn’t that a player recruitment though? Was it one of the props we missed? RCG maybe?

His refusal had nothing to do with a dispute over money.

He wanted certain guarantees and didn't get them and in the meantime the Storm assistants job came up so he decided to work with Bellamy again to further his career.

A Google search will show plenty of articles as to why he didn't come but none I have read mentioned money.

I had a few cheeky pot shots at my Eels mates early doors, but he’s got them going and he’s showing he knows how to recruit as well.

I believe recruitment was the sticking point and certain untouchables (I assume from a deal Steeler Bob did with the Gordon’s when they sold the Steelers share to WIN) became immovable objects and killed him coming home.

Could all be my imagination too.

I’m sure I read somewhere that all player options have to go through the board first for approval?
If so you can understand why we move at glacier pace in signing players giving our competitors a start.
100% correct.
All potential signings, re-signings, options and/or extensions have to be vetted by the board before approval. That is my understanding.

You would think a company like WIN would have people who understand budget delegation. So:
1. Select a true professional to be GM of football.
2. Have that person report directly to the CEO.
3. Give that person a budget with the rider that any recruitment must be within salary cap rules and reflect the aims of the clubs 5 year plan.
4. Develop a narrative that SELLS the club to potential players.
5. Hire a recruitment manager that can deliver that narative.

The worst fundamental for any ‘public’ organisation is a dominant Chair (or Directors / MD etc). So many organisations delegate responsibility but neglect to delegate authority along with it. Highly dysfunctional. Hopelessly inefficient and a cop-out for the person / people at the top.

You would think that a company like WIN would have people who understand budget delegation, but maybe they just don't care. For years they were the stand-alone commercial broadcaster in the Illawarra. They didn't have to do too much to thrive. They bought their share of the Dragons at arguably less than market value, so that kind of fell into their lap as well. They could theoretically sell their share in the future for a reasonable capital gain irrespective of how well the side goes.
