He certainly brings the name and respect. Big question over clubland coaching ability though. If I was recruiting I'd put Arthur under him or Holbrook. Someone with recent first grade head coach experience. Same way they did with Bennett and Woolf at Dolphins.
He did coach the Raiders 1997 - 2000. His record was ok...
1997 - 3rd
1998 - 7th
1999 - 9th
2000 - 4th

NSW has Daley as the head coach. But Bellamy is also part of the coaching staff. As long as Mal has an experienced first grade coach in his ranks.

One of the biggest supporters of Super League now lined up to coach a side comprised of 2 victims of it. The world works in mysterious ways.
Perth were a SL team. I'm sure Mal always supported their survival. It's not his fault they were sacrificed to bring in Melbourne.

who do you want then ? I don’t think Bellamy Bennett or Cleary are available
Arthur. Big Mal will hopefully be ok if he has someone with first grade experience alongside him. Arthur is desperate to move to Perth for family so he might be happy to play side kick for a couple of years then take over. Having Mal be the main coach is a massive gamble imo. might work, might be a disaster.

Indeed Perth were but they will also sacrificed at the altar as part of the peace agreement and very much a victim of the Super League War. But I digress...

I don't think Mal is an awful higher but reeks of Kevin Sheedy at GWS fumblers.

He has a national profile much higher than that dead shit and he’s not racist so he’s already ahead.

Is Mal a war hero like Kelvin Shandy?

I've been on this ride before. People speak about Mal as if his tenure was a flop. I honestly think even most casual Raiders fans mix up his coaching with his disastrous political career attempt.

Compared to golden era Raiders, Mals era was just so so- but he was being compared to an era when raiders won the comp or made GFs on the regular for the previous decade, to now become kind of almost contenders some years instead. Compared to probably 15 out of 17 current NRL clubs, it was a successful period. No stellar, but pretty good. There's this tendency to want to regard Mal as simple, but the Raiders had a lot of player input in his era and Mal knows ball.

Mal has been involved with the Raiders recently and seen Ricky improve when he brings in decent assistants or adjusts his style (stop deathriding halfbacks, develop a gameplan suited to your sides strengths). I think he'll coach in a way that suits his strengths, be humble enough to lean on experts where he needs it, trust his own decisions where he feels and Mal do the man managing, which he's great at.

He's been in on the ground floor of a fledgling club coming into the comp before. He has the gravitas to recruit. And I think he has the goodwill in the game that it won't get too nasty on him when the club probably struggles in the first year or two. Better Mal than Arthur!

Bear minimum for Brad
Brad Arthur has knocked back the offer to become an assistant coach at the Perth Bears – as he should, given he has coached at the top level for more than a decade. He could walk into the head coaching position at a club and do a great job. Brett White, an assistant with the Titans, Blues and Kangaroos and a rising star in the coaching ranks, has been mentioned as a potential recruit for the Bears

It's only fair. The game of Rugby League did nothing for him, so now they're giving him the chance to experience the Perth lifestyle for a few years as penance...
