No club in the EPL least of all those clubs with grounds under 20k have a god given right to be in the competition. They generally end up in the lower divisions quick smart.

Absolute rubbish. Brentford and Bournemouth are pretty well established EPL clubs and aren't going down anytime soon. Meanwhile there are plenty of clubs with 30K plus stadiums that have been languishing in the Championship and League One for decades.

The stadium itself has very little to do with how a club performs on the field.

No team in the NRL has a god given right to be in the comp. It’s at the discretion of the governing body. And the governing body bought a hotel sitting right on top of shark park.

I completely agree the Sharks shouldn't be punted or relocated. Of course they should remain in the Shire, in the NRL. However, you would imagine that 11 or 12 game days at Shark Park makes little difference to the profitability of the hotel.

On a side note, I spent the last week or so in The Cook Islands, on my flight home to Sydney (before a connecting flight to Brisbane) there were two whole teams of RL players wearing Cook Islands national team tracksuits. The players looked high school ages and there was a boys and girls team. I heard their shaparone mention at Sydney airport that they had a bus dropping them off at Quest Cronulla so I'd imagine the NRL uses the hotel for all sorts of reasons other than Sharks games.

The nrl will never drop or relocate an existing nrl team unless if off the club’s own accord. It basically will just give those fans to the afl. They learnt that lesson with the super league wars where the swans were gifted a supporter base overnight.

Sharks are ok, if they can upgrade their stadium to 20k.

I'd be fine with 18k, its mainly the fact the stadium looks nowhere near what the NRL standard should be.

Most, but not all PL stadiums averaged at (or near) capacity.

In saying all this, I'm ecstatic at the way our crowds are growing.
I'd just like us to create a culture where we can continue to grow attendances.

I have no doubt, that if the Eels were coming 2nd, instead of 2nd f**king last (lol), tomorrow's game would have almost been a sellout at Accor. No doubt.
We are certainly building that culture.

I agree Cronulla can stay in the competition and play in front of those small crowds while the rest of the comp gets bigger and bigger - it's just they should always get duded by the referees and the NRL commission.

Our crowds were stagnant for a decade and took off after Covid. I don’t think anybody saw this coming. It’s a matter of getting the balance right now. Clubs like mine need to rethink where they play their bigger games. But I never thought I’d see a doggies eels game draw a crowd like tomorrow.

NRL can use Shark Park for NSW school competitions or a training field for visiting international teams or out of Sydney NRL clubs with the Quest next door for accomodation.

Cronulla have outgrown Shark Park but there’s no better viable option closeby

How much would it cost to bring it up to standard, 20-25k stadium? Have to get other sports and local community organisations involved to get funding.

In the interim, an idea could be to build a decent looking temporary stand on the hill, similar to what was done at Christchurch or Mt smart.

I’d say it would go damn close. It could already go 65K+ with the eels struggling. If both clubs were going well I think we could see a sell out.

Hopefully in the next few years we see a little more change at the top of the ladder to allow more things like this to happen. The last 10+ years the top of the ladder has been too stagnant and a lot of our top drawing clubs have had little to no success.

I don't think its ever going to be bigger than 18-20k. Not enough room. There are options they can go with though.

I'd like to see them rebuild their western grandstand. There is roughly 40m from the field to the bushes behind the grandstand that they can use. Build it bigger and they also could potentially fit their COE into it like Manly has with their recent grandstand.

The next bit would be to fill in either seats or safe standing below the southern grandstand where the grass is currently. That would wrap the lower tier around the ground.

After that I guess you get creative with it.

There's no future at Shark Park, really. The whole precinct is an example of desperate short-term thinking.

IMO if it was going to happen, and this is near-fantasy, a new stadium would be near Sutherland Station. Ideally shared with a Sutherland A-League team for year-round use to justify the cost to the taxpayer.

It'd still be easy for shirefolk to visit but the downside is that the surfies would have to deal with more westies at their games, as it'd be quicker/easier for away fans to visit.
