don’t want to get too carried away based on one tweet … but they needed a credible bid from Nine/Stan to get a big result …

I think the best result is that they make DAZN pay more and nine keeps the three FTA games …
Nine bidding for the nrl pay tv rights was hardly surprising after they bid for all the AFL rights

The nrl pay tv rights are worth 450 million at a minimum

Afl gets 418 million and their ratings are around 30 percent less than nrl in aggregate and then there’s the two new teams the nrl has added

With serious bidding the pay tv rights on their own should get 500 million ( esp if origin is inlcuded)

Which leaves nine at 175 mill or so, nz at 30 to 50 million plus whatever they can make from the streaming rights make in png and the pacific

Nine aren’t saddled with the 418 million pa Fox pay afl now. Nine can certainly afford to outbid them

If would be karma after they’ve been paying nrl unders for 30 years

Plenty of journos ( who are paid by a TV companies ) say the Origin period brings in 80% of the money for ch9.
That talking point is such a myth and doesn't even make logical sense. The NRL at worst goes head to head with the AFL competition for ratings and at its best leads the AFL in TV ratings... Without Origin.

So how on earth is the NRL comp alone worth 20% of the deal? It's not, it's a bullshit quote that gets thrown out from time to time.

you don't think Pay Tv would have to pony up and pay for the privledge?

Anyways, neither origin or the GF is going to be shown on Pay TV so you're arguing over a scenario that is not going to happen.

No doubt they will but if the $50m valuation is correct. Then there is the starting point

Does simulcasting a game that is on FTA bring in extra subs? Probably not it is extra content though

Which is why the last paragraph is the case

This old chestnut.

Thursday night was a great NRL game, the score was 8-6 how many ads are in an NRL game like that?

Nah, they can just replay Lethal Weapon every Thursday & Friday night for 7 months of the year & 10 year old Border Patrol repeats, or some shit, as a lead in to 9news every Sunday night…. Origin is the cherry on top, but if anything they need the regular season games more.

Nrl tv deal was announced as $400mill avg
afl media deal announced as $642mill avg

this deal need to be worth at least $550mill cash avg or Vlandys has failed again.

Dazn have shown they’re happy to walk away if the numbers don’t stack up. They’ll know exactly what the value of nrl Is to foxtel and offer accordingly
Walk away and lose the market to Stan

League is the only must have product for pay tv

They should be paying 500 million pa next time with two new teams and origin simulcast

I really would like to see Fox lose the rights just out of spite

They will come back next time knowing the value of league

Dazn are clearly hard nosed and arent going To lose money on them, they’ll know what it’s worth to them and bid accordingly.

what that figure is only they know.

for Stan they’ll be guesstimating and may go higher with a accepted short term loss to push stan into a much bigger market position.

Sure, I follow the logic that the AFL deal is bigger because of more advertising opportunities, no argument there.

But it doesn't automatically follow that without Origin, the NRL deal is worth 20% it's current amount, that's ridiculous to suggest.

Yeah, soo hard nosed they spent over $3bn on Foxtel, which has its value tied up in afl & nrl subscriptions, losing the latter will overnight halve the value of Foxtel as an asset. There are easier ways to lose money…

There’s no way foxtel/dazn are going to lose the nrl. PVL is working the media to push the nine+stan angle to create a strong bidding war between the two. If seven puts up their hand for origin and/or internationals it will also fuel the bidding war. Exactly the environment PVL wants to create.

However I’d be surprised if we land anywhere much different to what we have today - only with hopefully significant more money to the nrl.

Last year FACT media deal ie only pay Tv and FTA TV, as per the thread name, the deal was NRL $400 plus million pa.
AFL only (2024) $420m pa. You never say it was $420m pa for the AFL. This and only this year it is different and by the end of this year the NRL will most likely announce a bigger yearly deal than AFL and you know it! Your got your Perth Team, loosen up!

Probably spot on

But seeing Foxtel losing rugby league rights and seeing the panic that would ensue would be sweet

Nine have the capacity to offer the kind of money that would push Foxtel up a lot
