Isn’t the greater wellington area made up of other towns like the lower&upper hutt etc?
Kapiti Coast 57,000

Porirua 61,000

Upper Hutt 47,000

Lower Hutt 113,000

Wellington City 209,000

Take away a few thousand from the northern extremity of the Kapiti Coast (basically north of Waikanae, the limit of our electrified commuter trains) that's just over 480,000 population that's within an hours reliable public transport of Sky Stadium.

Crucial, given the stadium is right next door to Wellington railway station, basically the nexus of the whole network, and just about every event we see the majority of fans come in via trains from Northern dormitory suburbs, and buses from Wellington City's suburbs (not serviced by rail)

Meanwhile, Christchurch needs a change in mindset... with less than 5% of those surveyed saying they'd take a bus to events at Te Kaha.

Hurricanes about 13k average, Wellington Lions (provincial championship) certainly less than that.

In fact, the Wellington Rugby Union are moving some Lions games to Porirua Park, the suburban ground of the Northern United (the Porirua based local club) to save costs, given that the NPC crowds don't justify using Sky Stadium every time.

Maybe part of that is due to one of the big issues in Wellington - the slashing of public service jobs over the last 2 years which has really had an impact here.

Any idea what the other nz super rugby sides average ?

Long term you would have to worry an nrl side In Wellington wood average around that figure too which doesn’t bode well for that stadium

Nz has so many decent mid tier rectangular grounds which are never utilised

Maybe Wellington one day could look at Hamilton for a few games (bad luck to the warriors claiming it) and play 8 games at Wellington

Wellington greater region about 500k..but south island has a million people (& many more sheep)
If you’re comparing like for like the lower North Island had a population of around 1.1M so the total catchment is pretty similar. (that’s assuming the upper north island remains warriors territory.

if you’re comparing regional populations Canterbury comes out ahead of Wellington 687K to 560K but it’s also a geographically larger, more spread out region.

in terms of which one would have the most fans within realistic travel distance to attend regular home games it’s pretty similar at around 500K but Wellington has better public transport infrastructure.

No idea what the other NZ super rugby teams average, but it ain't what we were seeing in the heyday of the late 1990s-early 2000s.

We have a lot of reasonable 15k-30k capacity grounds spread around the country, thanks to our provincial rugby union history.. and with the NPC season running very late July to end of October, there's scope to use them between the pre-season & Origin 3, and again in October after the GF for rep games/tests (as mid-late October is NPC playoffs, some grounds get freed-up)

Only question is whether the economics of taking a game over here to one of those provincial grounds adds up.

Strike while the enemy is weak, right?

Don't give the rah-rahs time to regroup & figure out how to save Super Rugby.
Sa and Japan could save nz with one or two less Aussie team

Heck just a ten team league with nz and sa teams with no Aussies would work
