Origins a drag on the Comp

The origin period isn't perfect

However, not one "solution" presented here or in the media offers a better scenario then what we have now. All of them are either too convoluted or simply introduce new issues while attempting to fix old ones.

The only way we are getting stand alone Origin games with a halt to the season is if the NRL shorten the season and convince the broadcasters agree to pay the same for less product. Unlikely to happen any time soon
Wrong.

Here is another idea.

Personally I prefer the Origin period to be done and dusted in one month. Have Origin played in three Wednesday nights in a row. Players will have up to 24 days in camp.

During the four week period, there will be 19 NRL matches scheduled. Each team will play two games. On the weekends leading into Origin, have four games, while after the third and final game, schedule seven matches in the back up round. A schedule of 4,4,4 and 7 over a four week duration.

In 2028 there will be 19 teams. You could have five teams play twice without Origin players, but those same five teams will have the bye after the third Origin game.

Sure, the idea is not perfect, but it still gives some content to the broadcasters. Such as Fox still having 'Super Saturday', while Nine has women's Origin on Thursday.

But more importantly it's a schedule that looks after the well being of the players. We need to reduce the rounds of backing up after Origin.

4M on TV

LU - "Let's get rid of it"
No one in their right mind wants to get rid of Origin.

You could get similar ratings standalone on Sunday nights, but Nine wants to keep the NRL competition going throughout Origin hence why we are in this position.

Nothing will change in the current broadcast deal but we don't know what the plans are for the next deal.

Origin is devaluing the regular season

LU - "I hate change so just leave it as is"

Both sound absolutely moronic.

Test football is getting devalued too. I remember the Pacific Cup final against NZ. Played on a Saturday afternoon at Waikato stadium, a venue that looks somewhat similar to Penrith's before construction. Only 13,000 turned up!

I am glad there is a three test series against the Poms later this year in England. Test series is needed over there to raise the profile of the sport, especially with English Super League struggling. We need to treat test football with more priority and respect and rep football should not always be about Origin.

100%

I'm so keen for the Ashes series, yet it seems like we couldn't give a shit atm. We haven't got a coach or anything booked in yet. I'm just glad the English are taking it seriously.

Pacific cup without Australia is going to be lit

Finally Samoa v Tonga even if it’s only one game

Those two have too play each other at least 3 times a year

Yeah Meninga was announced as Perth Bears coach over a month ago. The test series is just over three months away. Need to announce Kangeroos coach pretty soon.
