Both Matterson and Lane are 30 years old this year. They were signed to these contracts after they just had the best seasons of their careers. Matterson played Origin not long before he signed that, and Lane was instrumental in getting us to a GF.

Were they supposed to know that both players would fall off a cliff ability-wise? You’re looking at this in hindsight, which is always easier. Harder to predict how a player will perform in the future, but you can look at their recent performances to try and judge, in which case these were players we wanted to keep.

Were you a fan of these signings at the time? I don’t remember many people on here upset about them, in fact quite the opposite.

I think that’s a fair point however why has every single BA bum boy fallen off a cliff including his two nepo kids? The only one I’d argue has improved although it was from a very low base is Russell. However every single one of them on big contracts has regressed. ALL OF THEM. Which is why Ryles has or will be f**king them off.

Yeah it’s a worry as to why so many of our players, both young blokes and experienced guys, regressed so much over the last three years. No idea as to why, but just pointing out it’s not something that anyone could have foreseen.

Hopefully we have players who are on the up from here on out and we get rid of the players who are more likely to decline (which we already have with RCG and Gutho).

I wasn't a fan of either getting 4 years.

You only hand out 4 x year contracts or more to marquee players.

Cant argue with many of those, however I would probably say that Joffa didn’t much regress but was just the same average player he always was.

Paulo definitely did regress but I think he has actually picked up his game quite a bit over the last couple of months.

Lane was one of the best forwards in the game in 2022, and in the preceding four years was a quality first grader. His decline after 2022 was immediate and drastic:

But Matterson was one of the best forwards in the game every year since 2019 at the Tigers. It was until last year he dropped off to 'merely' quality first grader, and this year he has declined further:

Outside of a 7 week period while playing for a contract he hasn't shown the consistency of a elite player his ability suggests he could have been.

A player that the coach didnt pick for a semi final 8-9 months earlier isnt a marquee one.

We beat the Knights in 2021 and BA left Matto out of the squad and picked Makatoa ahead of him when he was fit and available.

Makatoa let in a soft try so Matto got brought back in against Penrith.

I would have played Matto both finals that year but BA clearly wasn't happy with something in Matto's game to put Makatoa ahead of him in a elimination final.

Ryles has come in and really handled the rebuild stage well so far. He certainly got rid of RCG, Gutherson, Lane, Matto type fossils that were not buying in. He did that well and has young players that are keen. Ryles is a harder task master than the previous head coach, Brad Arthurs, who was softer than you would want in an ambitious football club.
We are willing to accept this sort of a season from Ryles because things seem to be heading in the right directions (minus the injury to Moses) but he needs to improve season on season. Next year it is top 8 - or we do turn on him.
The above is how I see it.

Nonsense. Matterson was a 27yo journeyman by then (we were his third club in seven seasons), and there was the questionable and no yet explained exit from his Wests contract.

He got what 20mins from the bench and never to play origin again? Should have been a three year contract maximum, take it or leave it.
