17k watched the Giants in Sydney.
They have certainly made an impact on our great city
(of course the 17k includes people like my goose of a brother in law who tells me his family have followed Essendon since 1898 - the number of giants fans who watched it may be in 4 figures)
You sure it was 17k and not 17? I think someone put the K as mistake

I bet the AFL’s looking at these numbers and going WTF have we done wrong? I'll tell you what you've done wrong, you've tried to tap into the Sydney - Brisbane market and you've failed miserably
Afl games in Sydney and Brisbane used to get close to 100k when they had one team

Now with two teams and they’ve collapsed

And that’s with the afl spending over 100 million on their four basket cases

Ok that rarely happened in sydney and even rarer in Brisbane - and when it did was when Ten was showing them live and well before streaming. If we had Fox city data I think Sydney would be hitting that mark regularly - not all the time - and the Lions for big matches might hit it occasionally.

Yeh bc 17k watching it for free means there will be way more watching it behind the paywall at the same time in Sydney and Brisbane

Two teams has led to lower average ratings

If only the Titans applied that kind of attitude in defense. Must defend AFL... Must defend the cult...

Reality is we have no idea what the total audience in any city is like. anyone who says they do is lying to you.

well yeah thats obvious.
That’s obviously true in both codes, it has become really hard to tell how many people are actually watching in each place. I think that argument makes more sense for a team like the storm due to their historically poor coverage on FTA forcing storm fans to watch on paytv.

Also whilst this is hugely anecdotal I just don’t see the swans or lions having nearly as much presence in either city as they did in the early 2000s. Back then the whole AFL was taking over thing actually felt more legit. I’m not saying the sport is dying but I think it has went back somewhat as the NRL has bounced back.

As to the last part of your post I’m not sure I fully agree. If anything the reason you add a second team is to increase overall interest in your sport not just cannibalise what you already have. Like with the dolphins the rising tide lifts all boats. I don’t think when the AFL admitted the giants and suns they were expecting ratings to go backwards.

I agree that they were rarely hitting 100k in Sydney even at their peak …but I’m dubious they are doing it now on Fox … I think you have to actually live here to see and understand the lack of interest in the sport.. league is just a media monster now in Sydney that eats everything else 7 months a year ..even the British Lions tour coverage seems to be struggling this time ..although I noticed they had a lift out in the Telegraph yesterday
