Whilst the downturn you mention is true, aren’t premier sporting events that can only be watched on FTA (eg NRL/AFL GF, SOO etc.) not as affected by this? I could be wrong as I haven’t checked the data either but just a thought.

Nrl and origin especially is bouncing back whilst other sports aren’t

Origin did have a dip but has had a huge bounce

Apparently Storm`s Harold Mathews team is 100% Victorian born players now and with a large percentage of Victorian born players in their other junior rep teams.
Wait until those juniors start filtering through to the Storm first-grade team and the strong traction the Storm is already getting will only be magnified. Very exciting times in Victoria.

Sydney 18k for a game featuring a Sydney team is truly bad. That's a lot worse than say 10k for the NRL game in Perth considering population size differences and the fact perth doesn't have 1 nrl team let alone 2.

Surely the AFL and 7 would be worried that GWS have such little traction in Sydney.

You could pretty easily make an argument there's more interest in NRL in Perth and Adelaide than there is interest in GWS in Sydney based on these figures.

With ratings like that for AFL in Sydney and Brisbane its no wonder that 7 isnt showing them on the main channel, why would they unless they want to bleed viewers.

Fumble will slowly fade the way of union and cricket to a degree with tv stats like that. Social media metrics also align with the above.

Yep, The Storm/Eels match was a close exciting game.

The AFL looked all over after about 5mins.

You would have to imagine having the Storm playing against such a poor AFL game, would have seen quite a few Melbourne people switching to the NRL.

The AFL game was between 2 top 8 sides as far as I can see and the NRL game was a spoon contender vs a team battling for the minor premiership.

I’d say it probably has more to do with the storm being a big drawcard vs GWS who just don’t have a significant following.

I would expect, without having the data at hand, that all FTA TV is down 30 to 40% from 2013 to now.

So not sure that's a great comparision.

I said as much in my post. Point is it’s hard to say the ratings are all that good when they’re massively down on the last time the series was played. I also don’t think all sports have dropped by that much during that time especially not the actual big sports in Australia.

- AFL is largely watched by vic/wa/sa & largely watched by Anglo people
- NRL is multicultural with huge pacific island numbers
- NRL is generally exciting but this round and last have seen some bad blowout. Without seeing the comparison and knowing it, I’d suggest that the nrl is highly competitive and more competitive than afl - meaning the average score differential js lower
- NRL has huge expansion plans
- NRL has a lot to grow (sa, tas, nz, vic2, pacific, Fiji) - not in any order and excludes the known wa,png
- NRL has been on the backfoot and hopeless for many years
- NRL now has 200m in assets compared to 300m in AFL - and this will grow to 1bn
- NRL clubs are backed by pokies - this is sadly good money and will keep them going and the clubs are very rich - Canberra by example is worth a lot
- NRL has international expansion and origin
- the list goes on and on

The expansion options for rugby league are significantly better. To some degree due to prior incompetence but still we’ve got a lot more options than the fumblers.

Be interesting to see today's results, as I didn't bother watching the Broncos/Souths game at all. And I suspect a lot of neutrals would be the same.

The Phins/Wahs was a cracker though.
