2025 Crowd Watch

God forbid I mention the Code That Shall Not Be Named, but the weather, the Wallabies vs Lions game tonight at Accor, and being out of contention for the finals all look to have conspired to produce the worst Sydney Swans crowd since COVID restrictions.

The reason why it's significant? The final crowd figure will likely drag the Swans' 2025 average below 34,000. If the Bulldogs and Wahs can draw a 45,000+ crowd next weekend at Accor, it could see the Bulldogs average attendance eclipse the Swans...and the Bulldogs would have the highest home crowd average of any team in any code in Sydney.

Even before the weather, it's honestly insane that the AFL and NRL put up the three most Union Friendly Fanbases in Sydney up against a once in a decade event.

You'd have to think a Canterbury vs Penrith preliminary final (possibly even a qualifying or semi final) would be in the running to break the all time non-Grand Final crowd record this year.

For the record, the top five highest non-Grand Final crowds are:
- 74,549 (2009 Preliminary Final): Canterbury vs Parramatta
- 71,212 (2010 Preliminary Final): St George Illawarra vs Wests Tigers
- 70,354 (2012 Preliminary Final): Canterbury vs South Sydney
- 65,305 (2025): Canterbury vs South Sydney
- 59,878 (2025): Canterbury vs Parramatta

The fact that it has taken NRL 20 years to get this record back is so disturbing

I was lucky enough to be at the 2012 preliminary. Amazing atmosphere. Doggies totally marginalised Inglis and won the game. I was in a Bunnies bus which remarkably decided to drive through Belmore. Not a well thought out idea. But that crowd was sensational
