Wapu Sonk, who was relieved from his role as a board director of the new PNG NRL franchise has denied allegations of corruption labeled against him and said he will allow internal investigations to continue.

Sonk who is overseas and spoke to Courier Mail said the report was defamatory and he will allow internal investigations to be conducted into the matter.

"Incorrect and defamatory allegations made against me in the Australian media. These claims are based on false information, and the matter is being investigated internally within KPHL and will be referred to the police for investigation."

This newsroom reached out to PNG NRL Franchise CEO, Andrew Hill to comment on whether the board has decided on an interim director, but attempts were unsuccessful.

The Sydney Morning Herald, last week alleged that Sonk as the Managing Director of KPHL was involved in corrupt dealings, questioning his credibility as a director on the new PNG NRL board.

Following this report, Sonk was sidelined from his role in the PNG NRL franchise. This was confirmed by Prime Minister James Marape in a press release Friday 17 July.

There are about 3 sites being looked at for the player resorts including already existing apartment complexes.
It will be one of the first orders of business that this Board will have to decide on.

This includes deciding on the COE and from what I heard ye0sterday the COE will be built somewhere close to Santos National Football Stadium.

Any update mate ? I’m starting to feel time is slipping away particularly for the player accomodation…

Starting to think they are right … I don’t see too much urgency happening about anything

Is it better to give them another year or have them half ass it in their first year ? Won’t make any difference to the Tv deal … there will still be 9 games

I’d say with all the government money riding on it they’ll take the field in 2028, but you’d have to say some of the infrastructure will struggle to be ready by then even if it’s announced tomorrow. Some compromises may have to be made for the first year or 2.

For the stadium they can play at National Football Stadium while Sir Hubert Murray Stadium is upgraded, the player accomodation is another story.

yeah … that’s what’s I’ve been thinking too …. They have already started to receive the first instalments of the Govt money … so it’s a bad look if they aren’t ready ….

The player accomodation is the main issue though ..if they are building a new premises, it seems unlikely this will be ready Nov 1 2027 when the players start training …they can start signing players from Nov 1 2026, but if this is no where near completion, surely this would be a concern for prospective players ? I mean … I guess you can live in the Port Moresby Hilton for a bit … but you would want some guarantees as to when the compound will be finished ?
