If both parties mutually agree to terminate a contract then neither party owes anyone anything unless agree to.
Yes, I understand that but my premise was based on Simmonson asking for a release, not finding another contract so deciding to stay and us being stuck with him for 2026 - and then him not playing any FG but we wear his salary at full value on the cap.

You ask for a release, the club agrees to it. You can't find another contract is not your previous clubs problem, you've been released from your obligations and nothing to do with the previous club.

Is this not the situation that happened with RCG? We released him and he left. He found a deal later.

I’m pretty sure we released RCG, agreed to a payout (that would be on our cap this year) and then he signed a separate deal with the Titans.

And we haven't released Bailey, we have given him permission to look around early and he won't ask for a release unless he gets a new contract... what if he doesn't? We are stuck with a disgruntled employee who we have to pay contractually and wear his salary on our cap, even though he won't play FG again.

2nd trial actuall
His stats for that game were woeful. Maybe he had shit stats but played great? He must have if merkins keep pushing his barrow as a halves option. I wonder why the club insists on playing him at fullback? Maybe he will leapfrog Iongi?

I’m sure none of them agrees to a release unless they have another offer on the table.

You dont give him the permission. He either wants a releae or he doesn’t. You simply tell him we're happy to release you immediately, you can go now, you'll be paid until 31 October.

The club then says thanks for your time, what you do for the rest of your life is your problem.

Oh are you proposing a way forward? FFS, I thought that was how you were thinking it was now.
Been a long week for me already.

He's a fringe first grader - it's not in his interest to have an unconditional release without something else lined up. The RCG case is different as while he has dropped off the cliff this season, he was still considered one of the top props of the competition in 2024 with many thinking he should have been selected for Origin. Simonson's desire to have permission to negotiate a new deal outside of the club, and not an immediate release is no different to how its against conventional wisdom to resign from your job without another sitting in the wings.

That's the thing with modern sports contracts - the player, and by extension the player agents have most of the power and leverage. They can pull stunts like Lane and Simonson have (effectively refusing to play/train) while still getting paid, but a club doesn't have the ability to unilaterally sack a contracted player unless they have breached league rules (generally through poor off-field conduct etc). Ben Simmons in the NBA is the classic modern example imo. Sure he blew up his career, but he (and his agent) still got paid. It's the respective clubs that successively got saddled with him that had to suffer.

Reason why I appreciate him. We’ve had players in past with potential competition who have played seasons like busteds and not been dropped.
Kautoga has had no real competition to his spot yet was steadily improving.
Whether that was just luck/is sustainable, we’ll find out but he deserves some respect for doing it this year.
He’s certainly not untouchable but he’s far from first dropped.

I think to a degree though at this stage they’re competing against one another, with Doorey depending on rotations. Doorey can fill an edge but on straight middle, he’s obviously behind the other two. One of them (or better yet both) need to really improve their work rates to be anything other than the 15/16 jerseys.

I used to find you annoying and but now I enjoy our discussions.
