It was probably close to a 50/50 chance. Lets call it 45/55 (unless you'd like me to be more generous?). No need for hindsight gloating. Even the weatherman gets it right every now n then.
And if we'd gotten him it would've been for a fair price. The fact we didn't means another club offered more than what we thought was fair. Maybe they paid it all under the cap and maybe they didn't. If you believe the rugby league media, the trump card was his former high school footy coach. Precious memories lol

My point is missing out on any player isn't due to poor management, it's just due to market forces. Poor management results in overpaying players, or more to the point, overpaying too many players, since most clubs have to overpay at least some of them or they wouldn't have a team.
I know, you tell us regularly and I happen to agree. The evidence is overwhelming.

I know the NRL is different to other sports, but:

Joel Embiid
Barry Sanders
Megatron
Francesco Totti

All chose to stay with poor teams, even though they could literally pick wherever they wanted to play.

For the record - I don't ever think Tino would even join the Eels.

But stranger things have happened.
Wait…. This bloke?

If you are so thrifty with your roster you end up overpaying for one player who could always get injured and have the rest of the side compromised of fringe first graders.

Hang on.
We’re not just overpaying for one player. Dylan Brown is no longer worth what he is getting paid, and neither are Lane and Matterson. Penisini is also below his best.

2025 done and dusted - If we had to rate Ryles season ?

Shaky first half of the season, expected due to the complete change of systems and faces/ no Moses
Overhauled the roster basically, maybe a few more to go, but the bulk is done
Brought in JAC and Walker which were brilliant additions - we needed experience/leaders and they gave us that in buckets
A group of young and improving players, 3 of which are in the spine
Junior finding some old form, which was not existent couple seasons prior id look to lock him in for 2027-28 (reduced rate)

8/10 from me for Ryles, and I run that to the bank at the start of the year
If we snuck into the finals be a 11/10

Ryles said in the press conference yesterday, he now has a lot more clarity of what he has to work with. He made it in reference to the team and positions. Did mention spine was settled.

It took a while but the forward pack by the end of the season kind of shook itself into the right spots. Hopgood front row, Williams left edge, walker starting lock etc

Looks a lot better for next year.

And we still have Kk, Luca, Sammy and JDB to come in...plus I reckon JFL, is smokie to be another genuine edge option after the preseason....

What about KK? TBH I think he has more upside than Williams.

Interesting off season coming up. There has to be some new signings too.

Good thing is that Ryles and co. Have shown that there is a plan, and that they can coach. If this side learns to win the ruck consistently then the sky is the limit.

Kautoga has the wider potential range (that is could be better, could be far shitter) but with Williams’ showings on edge and development already instilled in overall squad, it gives Kautoga more time to develop

It's strange.
We all agree that ideally we need another middle and another edge but Moretti, Tuivati, DeBelin all need to fit into the middle and KK and possibly Latu will be pushing for an edge role. They won't all fit FFS.

It looks like Ryles is sort of modelling the Storm squad management structure, so I didn't think we wouId spent much on centres....

However considering our recent form in the forwards have been decent, and with Kk, Sammy, Luca and JDB to come in next year. Along with promising forwards Talagi and JFI (both already play nsw cup), I am starting to think we could afford to spend pretty decent amount on a really elite centre.

Not sure who, but if we don't spent big on another forward signing (just cheapies), reckon we could easily afford $800k on a centre.....
