My question to everyone is why the sudden explosion particularly since covid? The growth we’ve seen for an established sport barely even makes sense.
I would say social media and rule changes have played a significant part in growing the game.
Tik tok, intsta, youtube are choc a block with NRL content which grows and grows the game. The warroirs have the best social media team and it's a big reason for the 'up the wahs' movement that swept NZ. I see the All Blacks have tried to head Hunt the warroirs head of social media, they see how important social media is in selling the game. On YouTube NRL game highlights used to have 5k views they now get 100k, last week's Bris v Can game has 310k views, that's more than any of the 3 tests of the Lions v Wallabies.
Rule changes have made games more watchable. Have a look at games 5 years ago and you'll see the difference. The wrestle and team captians stopping the game by questioning every ref decision was making the game slow, predictable and unwatchable.
Is it sustainable ? Eventually it'll start to level out, but with 2 new teams coming in and hopefully a 3rd with NZ2 and with the NRL placing an importantance on international exposure the game should continue seeing growth over the next decade.
