Two examples of how terrible Channel 9 can be with televising rugby league -

1. 1997 Semi-Finals, Roosters v Bears at the SFS. This game went to extra time as it was 15 all at the end of regulation, with the Roosters running away with it in extra time. Game was on delayed telecast. Nine showed the first try scored in extra time (Sean Garlick scored for the Roosters), and then cut to Paul Vautin saying the Roosters ran away with it and summing up the final score. This was so they could squeeze in the news before its wall to wall coverage of Princess Diana's funeral.

2. 2008 Semi-Finals, Warriors v Roosters at Mt Smart Stadium. Friday night game in Auckland with a 8.30pm (NZ) kick-off time. Even though Channel 9 were contractually obliged to show all finals matches live, they showed this on delay as it refused to budge on televising the news and A Current Affair. So the broadcast didn't start until 7.30 pm (AEST), which was well into the second half of the game in real time. I protested by refusing to watch the match on

You also had in 1997 the Canberra v Cronulla semi final, that was cut short by about cause Princess Diana died. TV telecast just cut the game off near the end when Sharks were up 16-12. Game ended up 22-18 to the Sharks. Was seriously pissed.

100% agree with you.

Also, not a fan of players being interviewed during the game. Absolutely hate this trend. Same thing happens in cricket (with Fox interviewing players during the drinks break). Before and after the game, no issues whatsoever. But, some commentator walking up and shoving a microphone in a player's face as they're walking off the field at half-time....I mean, come on...let them focus on the game that they're still playing. It's a very unprofessional look from the tv broadcaster to do that.

They're just following what the American Networks do in sports like the NFL and NBA where players are interviewed as they come off the field/court at halftime .

Why epic final makes case for daytime GF

Fans of a daytime grand final have been given more ammunition after it emerged that Sunday afternoon’s NRL game between Penrith and the Bulldogs was the most watched week two finals game of all time.

This masthead can also reveal that the NRL significantly outperformed the AFL’s week two fixtures by a whopping 14 per cent across the two games in a boost to the NRL hierarchy as they attempt to secure the richest broadcasting deal in the game’s history.

Week two of the NRL finals had a combined average of 3.8 million viewers across New Zealand and Australia, up more than 34 percent on the corresponding weekend last year.

The Bulldogs and Panthers game attracted 2 million viewers across the Nine Network, Fox and Sky — and was also the most streamed finals game of all time.

• Week Two had combined average of 3.8m viewers across Australia and New Zealand, making it the most-watched Finals Week 2 in NRL history.
• The Bulldogs vs Panthers was the most-watched Finals Week 2 game of all time, attracting 2.0m across Nine, Fox & Sky.
• Across the two fixtures, viewership in Brisbane was up +24% year-on-year whilst Melbourne was up +95% YoY.

There has been a long-standing push to return to the grand final to Sunday afternoon but the NRL has so far listened to the wishes of its broadcasters. The broadcasters may yet jump on board if the current results continue.
The NRL and broadcasters will get another gauge of the appetite for daytime footy this weekend when Brisbane host Penrith on Sunday afternoon at Suncorp Stadium in the grand final qualifier.

The quality of football is better

It depends on if he just goes for top dollar or looks at other things like reducing the season length or daytime grand final

If nine (and Stan) get all the tv rights it could be more of a partnership

Nine won't. From its corporate perspective, it would be "wasting" a ratings bonanza in a Sunday afternoon timeslot when they could save The Block for another day. "Prime Time" for FTA networks in relation to ratings is 6 pm to 10.30 pm (approx.). That's when they put on the highest rating shows they have, and charge a premium for advertising.

Personally, I don't mind a Sunday afternoon GF. I'm merely pointing out the corporate mentality of Nine which has been displayed for the 33 years they've had ARL/NRL broadcast rights since Channel 10 defaulted at the end of 1991.
