Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

NRL just needs to wait for all the hoopla of the rugby World Cup to blow over and then pick the eyes out of union with a massive new broadcast deal. What will rugby in Australia have to offer players post the home World Cup? Another Lions tour in 10 years time? Possibly another World Cup in 20 years time? In the meantime they can run around in that slop of a competition known as Super Rugby.

The same variety it always offered.

It's funny how many provincial NRL fans mention holidays to Bali as a suitable international alternative.

$12 million for what a 3-4 week tournament? That's not bad. Also let's not kid ourselves, the RL World Cup doesn't have the prestige and cachet of a FIFA World Cup so its not going to get anywhere near the same revenue.
Plus England nz and the rest it will be 20 million total

The last World Cup in England lost money so this one is off to a great start financially

More interesting is seven outbidding the existing rugby league rights holders

Channel nine might be facing competition for state of origin

Very true. The one thing people have to remember is that the NRL don't have the broadcast rights to all international rl games to be able to sell.

Sounds like he wants to play fullback but he obviously can't whist Tedesco is there.

Except if they do it to chase a big contract at another rugby league club then it is ok.

Abdo is on point, but he needs to convince the RLPA to have a transfer window. One of the reasons the RLPA doesn't want a transfer window is because it doesn't allow player families enough time to uproot. Yet earlier this year, Joe Ofahengaue left Parramatta mid season to go to the English Super League.

At the moment, players and player agents can do as they please. Example, Isaac Moses and Lachlan Galvin. If the NRL allowed players under contract to go to R360, then they may as well shut down the comp.

NSW government didn't allow South Sydney to move to Allianz stadium because they still have an agreement with Accor. The NRL could learn something from the NSW government.

With Rugby Union giving him so much space with the ball, why didn't he make an impact in that code, just like he has done in the NRL?

RA would never let him go, especially if he had similar impact in union previously.

Yeah….they will take a less extreme position when it’s not a rival code raiding their playing talent …is that a surprise ?
I just see it as the NRL acting tough but do nothing to clean up their own house when league players want out of their existing contract to go to a better club or they have a better offer mid contract.

It’s an area for improvement from within for the NRL…. No argument there … Clubs try to move players on early too…at the end of the day …the player has a legal contract for a length of time and certain money specified…. So either side can still choose to dig in and force the other side to see it out …sometimes this can be impractical though ..

They do need to “act tough” if 360 gets off the ground and be very clear what will happen if players want to break a contract and go and join a competitor …if they are determined to do so they still will … but don’t expect to walk straight back if it falls over or it isn’t really for you …

As we know though …. Sometimes the NRL can say one thing and can do another …

Not having enough time to move is the most weakest excuse ever when it comes to holding back the transfer window. Thousands of Australians and their families move every day with very little notice,

The one thing to remember, te NRL can't just change the rules regarding the competition, nor things like "signing windows" etc without discussing it with the RLPA first. That apparently is one of the provision contained in the current CBA.
