Im just saying, your arguement is that the irish brought it over.

the irish who settled melbourne came in 1820–1850. The GAA probably started in 1880-1900; god knows what year the english name for these games became famous and even then, why would the irish be using the English name?

Ooorrrrr…. The VFL just did a tacky copy of an american concept. Which is more likely?

I think Aussie Rules comes from Sheffield Rules Football which was 1858-1877.

It's more likely that AFL has Irish roots than American roots. It's why they play that international game against the Gaelic footballers

Playing in quarters which started with college football, lots of shepparding concepts, the Swans stole Notre Dame's fight song (bought the rights actually).
Heaps of other stuff that is either true or I am making up.

The VFA introduced quarters in 1886. American football didnt take it up until 1910. The Swans didnt get the Notre Dame song until 1961 - lots of AFL clubs took similar themes - only the Suns, Power and Eagles have originals

ABC News Breakfast does a much better job than channel 9 Sydney News in terms of rugby league coverage. They have really upped their league coverage over the past few years.They had a great piece on the Blacktown Red Belly Warriors a few days ago regarding their hosting of a knockout competition at St Mary’s (which happened a few weeks ago) plus a story on the Koori knockout in Tamworth (which is on NITV and SBS on demand.)

I checked what 9 were doing via 9 on demand. I was bombarded with blocks of 6 ads in a row at frequent intervals, more than any other on demand service. Yesterday night 9 had the usual generic report about how many pies and how much beer Accor was preparing and how the grass was being cut to an exact length of 25mm via 2 apprentice greenkeepers. Later in the sport news we had a puff piece on how Billy Walters was unlucky in missing the grand final and another puff piece on Jerohme Hughes. No analysis. Nothing. This is what happens when you have a sports reporter who is more of a gossip columnist. Even 7 sport reports are far superior to what channel 9 offers.

That`s one hell of a change, before I discovered these forums about five years ago I used to switch on ABC News breakfast every morning hoping to catch a bit of League news, it got so painful I gave up, bloody sports reporter had a fumbles ball on the shelf behind him and the compares looking they were being forced to eat a shit-sandwich if they had to say Rugby League. Fumbles ...on the other hand...the sun shone out of its` arse.

They had an extensive article on the prelims on their nightly news the other night, I was taken aback, had to laugh though very next article was on how the fumbles are taking over League country in southern NSW. Thought to myself, they don`t change pricks.

Aflbc still angry at nrl for taking away the Saturday game

Nines coverage from what I’ve seen has been good

Grand final show on Wednesday went for two hours was brilliant

Has both coaches and Reynolds and Walsh ? On plus Lazarus who played for both clubs

Also an hour on the women’s gf

Well, they have a draft. Not sure how it works down there or how big it is but in America the nfl draft has become a really big thing. Like mega big.

The nfl is an all year money making machine. This is something the nrl has to work on. They need things like a free agency period and a draft in the offseason to keep the fans interested all year.

I just can't believe how many people watch the nfl draft and are 100% invested in it.

That because for many US professional sports, the "junior player" (for want of a better term) development is done at collegiate level and high school before that. They on the whole don't have junior leagues like rugby league does. That's why the draft is such a big thing over there, its about the only way you get to join a professional sport.
