Seven on the scene at Accor

For the first time in recent memory, Channel Seven was represented in the NRL’s suite on grand final day.

Seven West Media chief executive Jeff Howard was invited into the chairman’s box just weeks after this masthead’s revelation that his network had acquired the rights to the 2026 Rugby League World Cup on a deal worth close to $12 million.

It comes in the same week as the NRL sat Prime Video Australia head of content Alexandra Gilbert at table one at the grand final luncheon on Thursday. Gilbert was sitting next to NRL boss Andrew Abdo at the main table.

Chammas said on the journos podcast that sitting on the other side of abdo was the Boss of Amazon Prime in New York.

From the article from Bullflog Ritchie ..

“R360 insiders are aware that luring multiple stars away from rugby league could weaken the NRL’s next broadcast deal which starts in 2028.

There have been discussions at R360 around the strength of Australian Rugby League but an awareness that the game isn’t truly global..

this comp has nothing to do with rugby league

hey ? They are looking at players from Rugby League …including now the biggest names…

I would also assume that they would desire an agreement with the World Rugby power brokers one day …

My point is they didn’t start this comp to try and attack the NRL and I doubt they give a f**k about a potential TV deal for the NRL. I’m not saying it can’t or won’t impact us just that clearly isn’t their priority.

No doubt … their main priority is to make money …which to me seems equally a ludicrous proposition …based on the few details we know to date

I don’t think their main priority is to make money. I’m not sure if this is sports washing or what but nothing about this comp looks designed to make money.

Well…I notice the statement that the various Rugby Unions from around the world put out says the following ….

“the R360 model appears designed to generate profits and return them to a very small elite…”

But where does the profit come in? The money they’re talking about offering these players just isn’t sustainable unless they manage to pull some huge TV contract out of their arse.

Like I get what he’s saying, this new competition doesn’t care about the players, fans or even the sport of rugby. It’s very much about bringing in money to a select few and f**k everything else. The problem is everything they’ve announced just looks like another LIV golf where someone is willing to basically burn cash for an ulterior motive.

I can’t see this ever making a profit … it will be played in empty stadiums with very small numbers watching on free streaming services …

There are differences with LIV golf though …that was openly Saudi money from the start …the motives around this seem more secretive ..

The hypocrisy of the union crowd knows no bounds.
All the business types that run union have spent their entire working life screwing the little guy doing exactly that same thing and returning the funds to management and shareholders.
f**king wankers.

ORIGIN’S BROADCAST BATTLE
Rugby league’s $100 million showpiece event – State of Origin – is unlikely to be sold off as a separate package under the code’s next TV rights deal.
ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys has previously flagged the prospect of selling State of Origin as an individual asset under the NRL’s proposed ‘fragmentation’ strategy for its next broadcast deal.
Under the code’s current $2 billion deal, which expires in 2027, Origin rights are held by Channel 9 as part of their investment in the NRL with Fox Sports.
There were suggestions Origin could be sold off separately to a streaming service, such as Netflix, to maximise market value, but V’landys says that’s an unlikely scenario.
“I don’t think so, but that’s all to be determined,” V’landys said.
“We don’t know what is going to happen with Origin yet, we are looking at all options.”
V’landys initially planned to finalise the broadcast deal this year, but says delicate negotiations on the TV rights contract for 2028 and beyond will now stretch into 2026.
“It won’t be done this year,” he said.
“We’re going to take our time, it’s too important to rush it.
“We’ve had more interest than ever, people will be surprised by what interest we’ve got.
“This will be the best broadcast deal we’ve ever done because we have the biggest sports audience ever.
“We won’t undersell.”
