Nine are soo entitled about the NRL that they probably expect to be able to get exclusive games and still pay less than seven pay for their simulcast afl games with no origin.

I could see V’landys doing short term deals if the number isn’t what they want, and not necessarily with Nine. Nine need to know they can lose the rights.
I think your right about Nine entitlement. They were very hard bargainers last time around , would not move off $115m pa. They will try the same. This 2 game exclusive can not be entertained at all. If they try and they wont succeed but if they insist to have exclusive two games with the trimmings ie GF and SOS should be around $330 m pa.
I will say it again we decide exclusivity, And don't rule out multiply ie (3) TV FTA /Pay TV/Streamers. You employ this when they low ball you, like NINE will try to do.

I reckon a few months ago, before the British and Irish Lions toured, the NRL would've had a target figure in mind, like $3 billion.

Since then, NRL had another great season, which included a finals series where ratings hit the roof, and the many articles around the potential threat of r360.

So the target figure the NRL is looking for could be higher now, due to how the season played out and stories around r360 players earning $3 million a year.

So in a sense, you don't the blame the NRL taking their time to sign off on the next tv rights deal.

What is so important for the NRL is to get Ten/ Paramount involved. Top sports content is dominated and held by Nine and Seven. Between them they have cricket, AFL, Olympics, NRL, grand slam tennis like Australian Open.

My ideal scenario is for Nine to have 3 games a week and finals. Ten to have SOO, womens Origin, NRLW, one NRL game a week and Test football. While DAZN remains status quo.

The NRL opens the season in Vegas, so it is vital for the NRL to build relationships with overseas media companies like DAZN and Paramount, and sporting bodies like the NFL. If they build these relationships, then one day, the NRL could be rewarded very handsomely in tv rights revenue.

Whereas Nine/ Stan is locally domesticated, which may limit NRL's future growth.

Does anyone know of the financials (P&L) specifics of Stan inside the 9 Entertainment business ?
As an aside, where Nine will want to go with its` pursuit of NRL rights:

"Stanton uses the example of broadcasting the Australian Open tennis. The company used readership from subscribers of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald to capture those that had looked at a story about tennis.

"It then successfully targeted these people to push tens of thousands of them into signing up to 9Now to watch the tennis. Leveraging the diversified media businesses clearly puts Nine in a solid competitive position."

NRL dominates the sports pages of the Herald, odd though given this strategy Nine are unloading their radio stations while Seven are merging with Southern Cross Media`s radio station group.

I like your idea's, it very important to have two FTA if we want the extra $$$'s. Otherwise Nine will pay the same with a little increase. Danz could be trouble on price as well- with them thinking who else can the NRL go to. So have PARAMOUNT and even ESPN in the mix. We decide exclusity and at this stage we apply it according to the bid prices they make while adjusting how many games ( number) as well.

I agree it could be a game changer … but the timing is poor with the recent global merger going on there …. Australia might not be too high on the priority list at the moment

Or..........the timing may very well be good.......new financial clout and the enticement of a high value content addition to kick start the new regime could be quite attractive.

Plus, the wheels on this transaction have been in play for a while now (or at the very least known about) so while the head honchos may not be fully up to speed the management below would surely be.

Could well be …Time will tell…. Nothing to go on but hopeful dreams at the moment …not a peep so far about them being keen

That model in Australia squares more closely with the set-up in America and the UK, particularly as the company focuses more on English language content. That works in Ten’s favour, and with the new global boss of Paramount’s TV networks, Kevin MacLellan, jetting in for its annual presentation to advertisers next month, the pressure is firmly on.
This guy can do a deal for Channel 10 AU and Channel 5 UK and put games on Paramount+ Global.

People on here splitting the coverage across multiple FTA, pay and streamers. Whether the NRL would actually make more is unknown, but is it actually viable for broadcasters to only show 1 game a week, especially if it is a lower rating slot where you would assume a lower ranked match would scheduled?

Probably not. Those games would likely draw sub 250k so you do have to question the value to a streaming service. Fans arent going to pay two or three subscriptions to watch all games.

I think you would only want a maximum of one paid subscription service, otherwise you risk diluting audience. With Stan having EPL and Union they could actually be quite a popular platform if they got NRL. Would certainly make Kayo/DAZN nervous
Whats the problem with one paid subscription service is that they have pricing control, ie Fox/Kayo have gone from i think $14.99 to $30 per month in a a few years. I don't agree with Vlandy where he says he wants low paid subscription prices BUT he also wants records dollar deal also. These are mutually exclusive. ie don't go together. So competition in this paid subscription service is needed. This way no one has to pay a record amount but two PayTv operators compete in the same ground for a normal plus increase amount of money.. This move of two PAYTV operators will work in shitty business conditions which we are about to sail into. Nobody is saying it, but worldwide business conditions are just horrible, from stock markets at all time highs and are just waiting to explode (downwards) especially when the fake AI bubble breaks. I'll say it now, this overall business happenings will have a big influence on NRL dollar negotiations, ah well them's the breaks, I just hope this shit can hold together for another year, time will tell. So to have two operators, ie ESPN and Fox Kayo with two FTA Ten and Nine or Seven

Maybe, maybe not, the AI thing has a way to run yet, probably at least a decade, their talking 3-4 trillion invested in it over the next few years. And who knows even then it may be a net positive on economic outcomes rather than a game-changer or a flop.
The transition to renewables will probably pick up the slack after that anyway.

What does the lowest games on kayo alone draw? That’s what a streaming service picking up one game a week is likely to get. How many people do you think are going to subscribe to Disney to watch one game a week on espn?
