@Matua if you ever wanna wind up Aussie league fans when they put crap on the warriors or nz rl just tell them many of the founders/people of influence in the nswrl were kiwis

And that without the kiwis rugby league wouldn’t exist in Australia or the rules of the game changed in England to make it league and not union
Yeah, it is a quirk of history that league more established itself in Oz than NZ despite the fact that Albert Baskiville and the All Golds brought the game to Oz, and had Dally Messenger touring with NZ to UK.

I pointed this out to an Aussie league historian once who totally downplayed the kiwi influence and I got that info from his book
🤣

Is that the dude with an Irish name?

If Baskerville hasn’t died after playing for the all golds in Australia for one game he was going back to nz to set up professional rugby clubs

Given what was happening in Australia nz would’ve been league too from the start

And the nswrl was only formed cause the players wanted to copy the all golds tour of England and make money

If the nswrl didn’t succeed they would’ve happily retired off that money

George smith had as much part as messenger in the nswrl establishment

Yeh Sean fagan lmao

Yep, England probably has better depth as they have 10 full time clubs. Outright talent though I'd take the Kiwi list.

If George Williams and Mikey Lewis go down for England you've got a handful of others ready to step in who are of fair quality also.

Just on NZ depth, Johnson and Foran have both essentially stretched out the retirement party the last two seasons to step in for an injured Hughes. From next year onwards, how do you see the pecking order?

Hughes & Brown, Then? Nikorima maybe from Superleague, who would you put in at 7 if you were Stacey?
No idea who we have under Hughes and Brown, we'll have to bring Gary Freeman out of retirement next year, or we'd probably do better with Stacey playing than coaching even though he's like a small prop these days.

I think Crossland is the back up half in the Kiwis. Eek.

I didn't realise Nikorima was heading up north.

The Warriors better start developing that dude from rugby quick smart.

There were also moves from several provincial unions in NZ to turn professional on more than one occasion. Most were paying their boys under the table anyway in one way or another.

Benji is still pretty fit. I guess Crossland can be a makeshift half if needs be but yeah, not a great plan.

Katoa is NZ born I believe, but don't think they can convince him to come across.

I guess plan A is to pray that Hughes and Brown are fit and then plan B is Nikorima or see if Jett Cleary is interested in representing his birth nation.

Surely Aaron Whittaker is worth a shout?

Pretty sure back then nzru and mu/nswru were secretly allowing boot money

Rfu knew but didn’t want to lose more nations

Katoa moved to Oz so young that I don't really consider him for the Kiwis. Same with Cleary, he's an Aussie, he was just born here while his Dad was working. So I wouldn't really chase either, but wouldn't turn them down if they wanted play for the Kiwis.

Plan A will fail, so we might have to pull Dockar-Clay out of whichever reserve grade team he's playing for, and run CNK at 6 (because he isn't good enough for fullback anymore).

I have no issue with TMM, he's a serviceable half if our others go down, it's just a pity his club coach doesn't really like him so he'll be lacking game time.

Looks very much like NZ 2 is almost certainly going to be team 20. Every possible thing you could desire from an expansion team is in Christchurch and they're top shelf.
Stadium A+
Rivalry A+
New market A+
Talent A+
Support prospects A+
Cooperate B
TV time slot A+

Whats interesting is the prospect of Brisbane 3 and why it's so vital for NZ2 is that it's very plausible..

The NRL are doing a great job of holding their cards close to their chest because they'll use the prospect of a possible Brisbane 3 to scare the NZ government into funding this expansion like they did Perth and PNG. It's a very clever strategy by Valandy's. There reports that NZ are going to pay big for an Origin ( 70 million)
If Valandy's holds them over the coals for an entire team.. I wonder what we could see? Minimum 50 million? 100 million max ?

Origin they are paying five millon

But the fact nz is getting an origin shows they have their eyes on it

Warriors are a lazy club like the broncos were pre dolphins

Since the dolphins came in broncos crowds are up 30 percent, membership is up hugely and they just won a comp

I expected the warriors will also improve similarly with the competition from Christchurch

Small market, no backer and broadcasters have no interest in location.

Ya gonna have to do better than that

Christchurch has small population, economy and lower wealth than Australia. There's nobody like easts tigers to fund team or Foxtel as they did for dolphins. Kiwi government doesn't spend like ours because it's a small ass country. With Perth NRL are confident they can get it to a level to offload it. There's nobody in NZ to buy a team.

Who says only people in Christchurch would support the club?

New Zealand GDP per capita is ranked 23rd so hardly paupers.
