I think we have an average squad, which would indicate we are spending our cap appropriately. I get we want to have the best squad in the NRL, but I don't think it's as simple as getting 'smarter people' to the club. Having a better than average squad requires having more players on unders than on overs.I dont disagree with that but our forward pack isnt top tier either. Its solid but doesnt really indicate weve spent all our money either. So unsure where we are spending our money esp without dylbags. Moses earns a lot which is fair enough but not enough to screw over other areas
How do you sign players on unders, or avoid paying overs? You can just refuse to overpay but that doesn't mean they will want to come, especially if other clubs are offering overs. They will just go there instead. The only possible solutions are to offer them something outside the cap, to reduce their demands under it, or do a better job than their manager in predicting a young player's future value. But we aren’t even competing against the player managers, we are competing against other clubs that also want to pay for potential. In this case a rival club that overestimates the future value of one of our pathways players will offer more. Then our choice comes down to matching the offer (and overpaying) or losing the player.
