NORTH SYDNEY BEARS - HAROLD MATT'S

Captain: TBA
Coach: Greg Michel
Last Season: 12th (3-5)

Why they will be competitive: If not for a couple of narrow defeats, North Sydney could have made the finals in 2025. Now, with a new coach and a revised strategy, the Bears are well positioned to take the next step.

“We won’t field the biggest side in the competition, but with the changes we’ve made off the field, we expect to be fit and play with high energy,” said coach Greg Michel, who has returned to North Sydney after a year at Balmain.

“Our recruitment has focused on attracting natural competitors in an effort to close the gap between our best and worst performances, and overall we are excited where the squad is at.

“North Sydney doesn’t have a big junior system to draw from, but there’s an exciting crop of around eight locals coming through that have impressed despite being a year-young for the age group.”

Key Fixtures: The Bears hit the road for the opening two rounds and will be eager to open their account in Melbourne against the Storm or in round two against bitter cross-town rivals, Manly, at Brookvale.

Players to Watch: Norths have added punch upfront with the arrival of Max Tutt from Newcastle. The big prop played Andrew Johns Cup last season and has impressed in the trials.
Another from Newcastle, Morgan Carter is a running five-eighth with a rugby background who has taken up a scholarship at Knox Grammar. No stranger to league, the excitement machine has also starred in the NSW Koori under-16s.

Xavier Kahika-Cherrington and Zoram-Jhae Watene join from the renowned Queensland rugby league nursery, Marsden State High. Kahika-Cherrington is a controlling dummy-half who has a proven combination with Watene - an elusive ball runner capable of adding strike from fullback or in the halves.

Of the local boys, there’s big wraps on Khobe Tickner from the Asquith Magpies. Still a year young, the hardworking lock is one to keep an eye on.

Summer squad: Bailey Comerford, Billy Simons, Brayden Pearsall, Cash Souter, Charlie Barker, Chase Farrugia, Corey Abou-Touma, Dez Taleni, Dustin Hiscock, Eli Lowe, Ethan Cooper, Filimoto Ngalu, Flynn Comerford, Hank Souter, Jacob Van Tongeren, Jamie Thatcher, Jesse Franze, John Moussa, Jordell Harpas, Joziaiah Fakalangi, Khobe Tickner, Kuanell Fa’alupega-Sene, Lachlan Slapp, Lane Orley, Lucas Vawser, Mason Rawhiti, Matthew Axiak, Max Clifton, Max Tutt, Morgan Carter, Naite Sines-Wainwright, Preston Cunliffe, Qrisnan Silva, Rayne Fale, Sebastian Pei, Silas Smith, Talau Hala, Tom Watkins, Will Tartonne, Xavier Aholahi, Xavier Kahika-Cherrington, Xavier Toomalatai, Zoram-Jhae Watene

Pacific Treize is a rugby league team that covers the French speaking islands of the Pacific including New Caledonia, Vanuatu & Wallis and Futuna. Perth Bears recruitment manager Dane Campbell was heavily involved in setting this team up.

18 year old forward Maxime Alikialalelei from Noumea has now arrived in Australia to join Perth Bears feeder club Brisbane Tigers.

Brisbane Tigers have named all their junior squads. Plenty of recruits from outside the catchment have been brought in to assist the MM (U19) side.

Yes, Jordan Barlow is playing in MM.
Levi Langman is playing in CC.

Tyrell Lacey isn’t named in either, likely heading to North Sydney Bears but that could change.

I look forward to the day a WA junior is signed.

In the meantime - Darius Rogers (North Beach) will be at Paramatta JF next year, Jesse Rafferty (North Beach) is with the Melbourne Storm and Jayden Evans (North Beach) / South Perth) is with the Sydney Roosters.

I look forward to hearing what the Perth Bears WA pathway is and how our tax money is going to be spent on WA rugby league systems.

Encouraging for the long term success of the club that WA talent is already finding its way in the high performance pathway programs before the Bears truly get established.

I assume North Sydney will join the Flegg competition next year? If so, hopefully the club tries to lure some of these players across.

Brisbane Tigers

Captain: NA
Coach: Ben Trimm
Last season: 9th (3-6)
Why they will be competitive: Tigers success will be built on hard work and the unflinching desire of players to ‘not let their mates’ down.

“I’m really impressed by how hard the boys are working,” Trimm said.

“The extra they’re doing before and after. The work they’re doing in the gym on their own it’s really pleasing to see.
“We talk about earning our stripes. Not just for round one but at every session, for every game.

“They (the players) have shown they don’t want to let their mates down, they’re working for each and they’ll compete for each other from start to finish of every game.”

Key Fixtures: The Tigers will need to hit the ground at full speed this season playing four of last season’s top five teams in their first four games.

Games against Tweed Seagulls (away), Dolphins (home), Burleigh Bears (home) and Souths Logan Magpies (away) will really test the Tigers mettle but a sneaky win or two would give them amazing momentum and confidence.

Players to Watch: Contracted to Perth Bears Ryder Koia is tall, athletic and lengthy outside back who trouble opposition defences with his skill and willingness to compete.

Tai Kapaith has been the beating heart of the Tigers in pre-season.
A natural leader through his actions and words he has been consistently motivating his teammates at every training session.

“He’s really pulled the team together,” Trimm said.

“If he’s working on something as a No. 9 he’ll pull in the forwards and make sure they’re part of it. He’s also focused on making sure we have the right culture and spirit.”

Joe McGahan is quite and unassuming but the outside back, who quietly goes about his business and works hard, will be a key player for Tigers.

Summer squad: Abdurrahim Kaya, Bailey Vang, Boston Cochrane, Cohen Jackson, Cooper Benvenuti, Cortez Kirkpatrick, Dominic Jerome, Grady Payne, Jack Kennedy, Hudson Bishop, Joe McGahan, Jonah Wilde, Jordan Barlow, Kairus Booth, Karsen Leota, Kees Anderson, Levi Rusin, Lexin Hill, Lyntton Close, Marino Rimene, Max Blanch, Miakeere Burns, Quinn Timperon, Reece Gorman, Ryder Koia, Samson Mafi, Tai Kapaith, Tawa Simpkins, Tipene Cooley, Vaughn Pahiva, VJ Vialau, Zander Phillips.
