Barnett gone end of 26

There's just no basis for a swap. If it was a player agitating for a release because he just doesn't like the club then yeah, OK...but this is our captain who wants to go back to Australia for his son's medical needs. Presumably to be closer to family for support.

Again, we didn't give Penrith anything for JFH (although Ivan regularly takes our 'talent' anyway)

If any top tier player was keen to come to NZ, we'd sign them not swap them. As someone said, it's not like going from the Dogs to the Tigers.

What we never want happening is for any big Aussie stars of ours to get long-term injuries. They sit around all restless and such, with thoughts of home, nothing but trouble for us. This Barnett request was no surprise.

So his Daughters medical situation has nothing to do with it?

I have a feeling if Barnett wanted to join Penrith there wouldn’t be the same push for a swap.

That said, I’m happy we’re pushing for a swap or concessions of some sort.

So long as we treat Barney and his family with the respect and empathy they’re entitled to in the process (and I have no reason to think we won’t), I think it’s important we also show agents and other clubs that we’ll protect our interests.

Especially with the number of young Aussie spine players we’re investing so much effort into developing.

When he went down last year I thought 'here we go'. When I heard he was off home this year - without knowing the reason - I thought 'typical'. It just didn't surprise me.

So he has a sick child. No arguments there. Any decent organisation wouldn't stand in his way.

Now I'm watching Metcalf again, a season-ending injury this year in Rd 15, nine months on the sideline again, and thoughts of home, it's a tightrope we're walking.

Metcalf re-signed during his injury layoff, so I'm pretty confident there. And not right at the start, either - October he extended by 2 years through to 2028, was injured in June.

Looking back, most of the recent guys we would've rather kept left for family reasons - Walsh, Walker and now Barney.

Addin was the only questionable one but given some of his antics, we probably weren't that upset he left despite his obvious on field ability.

So if we take what the others said at face value, its probably just an unavoidable function of guys with young families being 2000km+ from home. Perth may eventually have to deal with the same thing themselves. Maybe PNG as well, although the tax breaks will be a greater incentive to see things out.

This stuff from George I find interesting, you’d imagine something comes together, but if push comes to shove, do the Warriors not release him and he has to sit out of the NRL next season ?

“With Barnett, it’s been absolutely clear to him and his agent from the outset that wherever you go, we expect compensation,” George said.

“And what that looks like and who that is, we don’t know yet. We’ve had a few clubs contact us, but again, it’s playing that patient game.

“Whoever we’re bringing to this club’s got to add value, not problems, and they’ve got to connect with coach Andrew Webster. That’s just how it works.”

I like that last paragraph as that should rule out Zac Lomax but yeah, they've already agreed to let Mitch go so they can't then go and say he has to sit out a season if the right deal doesn't come around

They also keep mentioning how they got JFH after AFB left, but that’s really a moot point in this situation, and AFB signed with the Sharks and the Sharks had absolutely nothing to do with that deal

Interesting or weird. Release a statement saying release for family reasons and then big talking about compensation.

Talk around that he agreed to terms with Brisbane yesterday

The guy from NSW that needs compassionate leave to return home is still going to be interstate ?

To be honest, I've changed my opinion on this. I was previously firmly in the 'we don't deserve compensation, he's left for family reasons' camp...but unless he goes to Newcastle, I now feel like we do.

Barnett has no ties to Brisbane, Melbourne, Parra. So the highest bidder, is basically getting him as a transfer, not a compassionate move.

Exactly my point above. Yeah OK, Brisbane is closer than NZ...but it's a little bit tenuous, and if that's the case, 100% I'd say well that's cool you can go to Brisbane - you, a Newcastle boy and proud NSW rep - but that doesn't quite fit the compassionate grounds and we want a player. Brisbane have a lot of Kiwi boys, give us Karapani and we'll call it square.

I thought it was for the health services moreso than for family?

Anyway, I don't really care, as long as we bring in a new prop, but knowing this Warriors we'll just convert a second rower.
