As he should be. A roof is a tremendous waste of money and has no place on a footy stadium. Unless you're in Canberra.
Completely disagree. A roof is important in Rugby League for both spectator comfort and keeping the games of a high quality. Those Vegas games benefited from the field being dry. It's important outside of Rugby League because it helps maximise the amount of events you can host.

The issue with roofs is costs but for major stadiums it's definitely a worthwhile investment. For an Accor or a Suncorp, it's a great investment.

Rubbish. Rugby League is an outdoor sport and should never be played under a roof. It would be a great shame to take away the elements of wind and weather and the strategic effect it can have on matches.

Fortunately both Accor and Suncorp will never have a roof. This is Australia. There is no need for a roof on any stadium. If you want complete protection from the elements go watch netball.

On Lang Park- I’m happy to hold on development starting until after CRR opens and it’s a quick train ride to the Gabba. Getting to those games in 2023 was cooked, the Gabba is shocking to get to at the moment

there’ll be a lot more irate members when we get a Gabba capacity issue (20,000 seats less) when Lang Park gets the work

That point about a roof providing for good quality games is a good one

Guess we better not play any more games at Allegiant Stadium then lol.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I couldn't disagree any stronger.

I never like seeing people disappointed, but I hope you are in this case for the betterment of the sport.

Meanwhile the AFL are going to have two roofed stadiums lol.

Especially for major event games. I enjoy the odd wet weather footy game but I don't enjoy our major games being affected by it, especially as it also tends to affect crowd numbers.

Yes because all spectators love to sit in the pouring rain when watching a game

By the way, at most lower levels, netball is played outdoors.:rolleyes:

Venues NSW boss reveals secret business case backs Las Vegas-style stadium roof

Government bean-counters have given a Las Vegas-style roof for Accor Stadium the tick of approval, with a feasibility study finding the benefits outweigh the $300m-plus cost.

Plans to put a Las Vegas-style roof over Accor Stadium are a step closer to reality after state government bean-counters gave it the tick of approval.
A government feasibility study has found the benefits of putting a roof on the Olympic-era venue would outweigh the project’s costs, heaping pressure on the Minns government to commit to the plans.

Sports Minister Steve Kamper first flagged enclosing Accor Stadium with a roof in 2024 after watching NRL’s inaugural extravaganza in Sin City.

Sporting and business leaders have long argued for Sydney to have an enclosed stadium, to end the embarrassment of having major events rained out or cancelled due to weather.

Venues NSW boss Kerrie Mather revealed in a budget estimates hearing on Thursday the project had been ticked off with a “positive” business case and sent to the state government for funding “consideration”.

She said the benefit-cost ratio (BCR) was “between one and 1.5”, meaning the benefits outweighed the costs.

Ms Mather made the extraordinary admission by mistake, later insisting details of the project were “cabinet in confidence”.

Mr Kamper refused to commit to building the roof, despite the positive BCR.

“We are continuing to assess the business case for an operable roof at Accor Stadium,” a spokesman said.

Ms Mather said the cost was estimated to be well over $300m.

She said an enclosed stadium could add sporting and entertainment events to Sydney’s calendar and make the Harbour City “really competitive” with Melbourne.

It would make it “less risky for promoters to actually commit to a much longer stay when they’ve actually got more protection”, she said.

“With a roof, it actually makes the prospect of a cricket world cup a really attractive proposition, and it makes us really competitive with the MCG,” Ms Mather said.

Accor Stadium is Sydney’s largest venue, and the stage for the city’s biggest sporting events, including the NRL grand final and State of Origin matches.

It also recently hosted global music acts Oasis and Ed Sheeran.

Business Sydney executive director Paul Nicolaou said a stadium that was “only just good enough for the 20th century needs to be brought up to date for the 21st century in line with Sydney’s status as a global city”.

“It would strengthen Sydney’s ability to compete with modern international venues and attract blockbuster events that drive tourism, investment and economic activity,” he said.

“As Australia’s global city, Sydney needs world-class stadium infrastructure, and a retractable roof would future-proof Accor Stadium as the premier destination for major events.”

Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly said the “talk of a roof is good news” but a lot more needed to be done to bring the stadium – South Sydney’s home ground – up to scratch.

“We welcome any discussion about improving the experience at Accor Stadium. We, along with a number of others, have been advocating the stadium needs a significant refurbishment for 15 years,” Mr Solly said.

Liberal sport spokeswoman Natalie Ward supported the roof, and called for the government to release its business case.

“The public at least deserve to see the cost and benefits of putting a roof on Accor Stadium,” she said.

Where is the NRL on this?

It's only the venue for their most important games.

Absent just like for Olympics infrastructure.

No strategy, no results.

A complete rebuild of Accor isnt going to happen in the near future.
That ship has sailed and Sydney got 3 new Rugby League stadiums within this cycle.
If its a roof, then so be it.
Transport to Sydney Olympic Park will be fixed with the Metro and no one can then complain about the weather as an excuse not to go.
Either a roof or its nothing.

Nope that’s a terrible outcome. Would rather just leave it for another 10 years as is and then rebuild it. Putting a roof on it locks us into this stadium for the next 30 years. Surely some sanity will prevail here.

A roof is being driven for concerts only. Is the nrl going to step up here at all?

The NRL have done some good things over the last six years. Bringing the game back during Covid, Dolphins, increase in crowds etc.

But one area they are lacking is stadium upgrades. A new half baked Penrith stadium will open next year. The NRL went missing in Qld with Olympic upgrades. They have no plan with Accor other than a yearly contract to keep the GF there. While with Canberra, Barr is laughing at the NRL.

What the politicians fail to recognise with Allegiant stadium, is that fans are closer to the action, compared with Accor. I feel like the pollies want a roof purposely, so that it avoids a complete rebuild of the stadium.

Governments and their business cases and feasibility studies which ahow the benefits outweigh the cost are not worth the computer screen they are typed into.

It will cost $2B-$3B to rebuild Accor.
No government will do this in todays environment.
Gladys nearly got it done for $1B but was killed off by the ALP,SCG trust, fake outcry by Fitzsimons and Covid.
Its roof or nothing.
