Knock-on Effect NSW Cup - Eels Team

I think we should have matched Russell's Perth offer - he earned rep selection (PM XIII vs PNG) at the end of last season (that's one better than Will Penisini has amounted to).

We have absolutely nothing coming through lower grades in the outside backs. That's more reason for the Eels matching the Perth offer... but at the same time that's also more reason for Russell to take the Perth offer too.

Whether Sean would have taken it to keep on or just preferred to have a change and be part of the start of a new Club is another matter.
What was the timing ? Did Russell sign before Zac jumped ship ?

I think we are all talking with hindsight on this one, as Avenger said matching that offer at the time would have been laughable. I don't think anyone would have predicted Russel would become arguably our best OB, yes he's been improving year on year but seems to have taken a massive jump this season.

Even considering this I would still feel a little gross having him on the books for 600k a year on a long term deal.

Not blaming the club for that one.

Apparently Russell signed a $3m - 5 year deal. The forum would have shut down if we matched that with the amount of expected responses.

I thought it was about $600K a year but couldn't find any source, forget where I read it, hence why I questioned the comment about "letting him go" being dumb.

Paying Russell $650K a year may have been even dumber.

To continue this debate a certain someone will read this and post that this is market value for a centre of his quality.

Samrani doing ACL. I think thats his career. 12mths off. 6-12mths to g et back up to speed. His agility and speed was already borderline to be NRL level. I doubt we see him in NRL again tbh.

Russel we spent 4yrs trying to develop into an NRL centre. I never rate ld him that highly but he has finally come of age. And unfortunately the staff couldn't see it so bought in Kelly for depth and let him go? Dumb.

Unsure what we waiting for now? Nanva? He is ok but his ceilings not that high.
R.Pensini? Cant string 3 games together.

Alamdaeine and J.Tago are Massey cup level.

It's actualy desperate times that we are scouting NSW cup for other clubs back ups to improve our NRL side. But that's basically where we are at.

I think we need to sign a stud in the backs whonis origin level or close and a project player like Mclean who is young and may suprise.
Have to move now.
I heard you the first time FFS! 😁

Who says the staff couldn't see it? He has played 20+ NRL games in each of the past two years. Maybe we should've kept him in reserve grade so the Bears wouldn't want him? Apparently that's how we could've kept Blaize Talagi. Stick him in RM Cup until he signs a long term deal on massive unders.

Exactly. What's the point of player development if you have to pay overs to keep them.

He was already our best outside back last year - Lomax was only decent up until he lost Origin II (and the series) for the Blues.

I think that's decent value imo, given he reached rep level at the end of last year - and we have absolutely zero decent centres (capable of defence) on our books.
