even allowing for TDS's contract and upgrades to Iongi and Smith it is at best Twighlight zone stuff...

It makes bugger all sense..

Browns left but we had to upgrade Iongi though Gutho left and we did what with his coin?

Pezet would be on alot less than what Brown was on and Iongi would have been on alot less than what Gutho was on.

Anyone else thinking with respect to pinball machines they should make the "paddles" a few millimeters longer on both sides? It has long bothered me that nothing can be done about one going straight down the guts.
I blame Albo. Recently Hanson suggested bringing back the middle of the guts posts we once saw. And Magoo knocked it on the head. True story , totally Google it.

I'm by no means an expert, but my understanding is we are required to:

- have a top 30 contracted players; and
- spend a certain percentage of the salary cap

The second point might explain why some of the nuffies contract to the Eels currently are overpaid.

It’s insane this Is not being discussed at length by the media voices. If the Rorters had a quarter of their cap leave over a few years and replaced with not a single “ Star “ you’d be hearing every other day about the huge warchest they have to spend.

Makes me wonder how much we upgraded Moses to sign his player option away .

it may also explain why we have park footballers in our top 30 ( Tago and Mataele )

We only have 28 contracted players.

Yes we need to spend a certain amount of our cap but we need to be smart about it front load contracts especially for Moses who will be retired at the end of 29 not over pay bludgers like Tago or Kelly..

The only “acceptable” reasons would be:
1. We had to pay Lomax partially to have the release enforceable - shouldn’t be a whopping amount but - like that plus Kelly shouldn’t even be what we saved on Lomax leaving
2. We’ve paid “overs” to Iongi and others with a wink that the overs would encourage those players to pay us back next contract - there’s very clear risk there especially because I think we did that throughout Brown and Gutho’s tenures and it never got paid back
3. We’ve recognised no one available for 2026 so let’s save it to later in year when we resign Tuivati, etc and we can give them a healthy bump (similar to point 2) for 2026 - the risk here is either the player don’t know this or know it too well

I think you have to spend 95% of your cap from memory

I don’t understand how we wouldn’t have at minimum $1-$1.2 left to spend with 2 roster spots available.

We’ll also get dispensation of approx $300k for both Hoppy and Doorey as they will miss more than 12 weeks.

It's because shit sides like my Dragon's can only attract plodders and players after a last pay cheque and we have to pay overs even to get them to fill a 30 man roster while the top sides are able to pay unders with a carrot that you can play semis and win a comp and life afterwards.

If there was no requirement to spend 95% of your cap, you could pay a plodder say 300k and not 400k which then leaves room to pay for better quality players when they come on the market.

As someone noted above, if all clubs are spending the same cap and barring any significant TPAs or back door deals, why is there such a huge difference between the squads of the top 2 or 3 teams and the bottom 2 or 3? Can't all be down to incompetence of club administrators and recruiters.

That’s because you’re double flippered.

The recurring theme in these discussions is how overrated our juniors really are. We all know the duds, but looking back over the last decade — aside from Dylan Brown, who we picked up at 16 from New Zealand — how many have actually become consistent senior rep players?

Not many come to mind.

They most likely are overrated but I would also say that once they leave the Junior programs there is a fundamental issue with the programs to continue their development..

Apart from Sam Tuivati who has come through in the past 4-5 seasons?

The PNG job is a poisoned chalice, like the Titans job. It's for coaches with no NRL experience or no other options.

I'll go out on a limb here and state that PNG will be a power house within 3-5 years if not sooner.

Tax free wins every day over living in two desperately failing financial system countries like Aus & NZ that just keep digging deeper and deeper in our pockets by the day. I know where I would go play/work if I had that option.

These players have a very short window to set themselves up for life. The difference between $500K in full vs $500K before tax is massive over a 3-5 year stint. Great work if you can get it.

All the money in the world couldn’t convince me to put my family in serious danger. I give it 3-5 years before a NRL player is reporting being held up or robbed.

We’ll find out if it’s enough. PNG might have ‘superior employment conditions’ but there’s a reason people are migrating to Australia en masse and not to the tax haven that is PNG.
