And Kayo has far greater penetration among AFL fans in Melbourne than outside Melbourne, because non-Victorian teams get all their games broadcast in their local market on Channel 7.
I'm glad somebody understands this. Most of the rocket scientists on here think broadcasting home team games into local markets is some sort of recent strategy designed so AFL can beat NRL in the head-to-head FTA ratings

Nobody reads it anymore anyway. Won’t be surprised if Southern Cross offload it, it’s a bit isolated among their other media assets.

Oldies like me still read the paper …if I didn’t glance at the odd headline or look at the table every once in awhile …I would literally have zero exposure to the AFL

I also find it interesting that the NRL rights negotiations have literally just started and I've already seen multiple AFL fans trying to shoot down the optimism of NRL fans.

Serious question, does the NRL getting a large deal really impact the AFL that much? If anything the NRL leaving Kayo would be bad for the AFL.

The AFL gives up a small amount of overall media rights revenue to do this. Kayo would pay more than Channel 7 to have greater exclusivity outside Victoria for the AFL.

Again, which is why comparing media rights amounts head-to-head is stupid. The AFL clearly thinks that it benefits somehow doing this, why else would they give up the money from Kayo as a result.

They are very insecure, it’s a Victorian thing, they crave external validation.

Do you honestly think the opinions of individuals on an internet forum can influence the value of billion dollar corporate deals? That's an out there conspiracy theory.

Probably only if they dump Foxtel/Kayo for a different streaming service and cash-strapped fans are forced to choose between the two.

Well I find it interesting that since you have joined, most of your comment activity has been about crowds and tv ratings/rights.

NRL fans have every right to be optimistic. The new media rights deals will be huge and bigger than the AFL's. Whatever the media articles are about "oh maybe the NRL won't have that big a deal" have no idea what they're talking about.

I jumped into this thread to just point out the AFL obviously gets more revenue outside of media rights deals, and the AFL in many cases do not care where the revenue comes from in order to be able to spend it for the reason why it exists.

The NRL might have more money via its media rights, but it is competing with the AFL for how cheap they can make participation to increase its numbers. I said this earlier that NRL has done an outstanding job with touch/OzTag. They manage it well, and it keeps people engaged with the sport and its increase in participation genuinely contributed to the increased media engagement that leads to the new media deal.

At the end of the day, whether or not it beats the AFL's deal depends on the bidding process. For myself I just want a deal that keeps the sport accessible and helps the sport grow both domestically and internationally.

I'd love to see Paramount get the rights on the basis that they show FTA games in America.

Which one will you be choosing ?

Foxtel/ Kayo is in a bit of bother if there is mass exodus iof NRL subscribers…they better get that bid in
There are some NRL fans who like cricket, formula 1, too. Maybe they cancel over the winter. Maybe they forget to and keep paying $30 or $45 for something they don't touch either way.

Well ..I can assure you that most AFL fans would feel differently…. I think a lot of the ones living in WA, SA and VIC wouldn’t agree with you, and are very ignorant of the popularity of the NRL …

I still think it’s not a given they get more …I think it will be close
