English football: shift to defensive tactics

I'm interested in what people here have to say about the fact that Italian teams in Europe have this season been beaten by British teams who have finally wised up and employed the kind of defensive football that the British have whinged about in the past when Italian teams beat them.

Exhibit A: Rangers vs Fiorentina
Exhibit B: Liverpool vs Inter
Exhibit C: Arsenal vs Milan
Exhibit D: Capello being employed to manage England

It is clear that British teams have finally learnt that to get results, you need to be rock solid at the back.

Manchester and Chelsea have the best defensive records in European competitions this season, I believe. No coincidence that both are in the final.

On another note, and somewhat related, the fact that the English FA has given the job of NT manager to Capello signals a massive change in thinking at the English FA, doesn't it?

Basically, the good season that English clubs are currently enjoying in Europe is largelly based upon a shift in mentality regarding the approach to defending. Italian teams were beaten this season against English opposition, mainly because they couldn't break down the defences. Arsenal vs Milan was a great example of this, as was Inter vs Liverpool.

Manchester United epitomise the hard-nosed defending away, and conservative approach at home. They only managed 6 goals in 6 games leading into the final, whereas Chelsea have scored 10 goals in 6 games leading up to it.

Anyhow, a few years ago the British media, along with alot of people on here would have cried blue murder at Italian teams using these kind of methods. Now that it's working for them, I can't hear a peep from anyone in this regard.

Just an observation.

I think you are right.

And taking the point a bit further, German football has been slowly becoming more attacking. That has resulted in a decline in their european fortunes, to the point where first Leverkusen and then Bayern had 4 put past them by a counter attacking zenit.

Interesting observation, but I'm not sure the evolution has taken place over the period of one season.

Chelski changed managers and it made a big difference in their performance.

I agree with you in that the evolution hasn't taken place over one season. However, I don't think anyone could deny it is taking place.

I have no problem with it, though if it was Italian teams doing the same alot of people would be whinging. Alot of people here see the Italian game as all defence and catanacio and libero systems and like..oh no, it's another 1-0.

Whereas for the best part of 15 years, England has been getting weekly games showing Serie A, and raving about it's players. Capello's Milan, or Lippi's Juve weren't defensive, they just knew how to defend.

It has alot to do with the influx of players and managers from the continent into england as well.

especially the frogs

seems to be an influx of managers and players from France,

I've seen a bit of the French League on Setanta and its pretty ordinary, no wonder they play in Pommyland, Italia or Spain

Ligue 1 is very ordinary. No surprise to see one team completely dominating it, and also no surprise to see that when it comes to the crunch in the Champions League, Lyon aren't good enough.
