Shillington joins Raiders

May 15, 2008 - 12:21PM

Canberra have secured an NRL recruitment coup by signing Sydney Roosters prop David Shillington to a four-year deal starting next season.

Shillington, 24, was a priority signing for the Raiders following the departure of Michael Weyman next season to St George Illawarra.

His long-term deal shows the faith Canberra officials have in his ability to lead their forwards well into the future.

Shillington had been hopeful of remaining at the Roosters but salary cap constraints forced him to look elsewhere and he is now excited about a move to Canberra.

"The Raiders are a young side on the up, and after talking with Nigel Plum and Joel Monaghan it looks like they have a strong future," Shillington said.
"They have a good young side with plenty of talent, and their Toyota Cup team is also strong at the moment.

"I'm looking forward to moving to Canberra next year, but until then I'll be looking to finish the season strongly at the Roosters."

Raiders assistant coach David Furner, who will assume head coaching duties in 2009, said the signing of Shillington was a huge boost for the club.

"Front row is a position we've been looking at boosting, and I think his signing is a very good one for the club," Furner said.

"His size, his aggressiveness, his off-load ability and ball playing ability makes him a great asset.

"He's still young, and he'll add a bit of starch to the pack."

Sensational news. The trade-off of Weyman for Shillington sees us comfortably ahead, IMO. He's a keeper. I'm wondering what salary cap constraints the Roosters had though, given Tupou moving on and now Shillington.. .you'd think they'd have a little bit to throw around?

Considering Weymans luck with injuries and the money he would have commandered, great and to be honest I rate shillington over weyman anyday anyway.

Roosters didnt expect to sign mason, so its not surprising that they would have to offload a few good players this season. They still have to re sign fitzy.
Havent seen any players linked to them this season... how different...

It is a shame Roosters lose Shillington and Tupou to keep Ogre & Mason, BUT, Shillo & Toops were perennial underachievers till the Bulldogs duo joined us. With Shillo & Toops, it seems they only really perform well when the team is, they aren't people who can stand up when the team is struggling the way that Fitzgibbon does.

Although he is improved under Fittler, I'll always struggle to rate a prop that got bashed by Shannon Hegarty.

Dissapointing to let him and Tupou go, hopefully we can extend Myles' and the Paea's contracts. Keeping in mind we have re-signed SKD and Perrett already this year.

Good luck to him.

Is playing better this year....but we have some quality young forwards in U/20's coming up.

Ah yes, the talk-down, as exhibited by Max Power. A trait often seen in rugby league supporters when describing players who have decided that they no longer wish to wear said supporter's colours anymore.

I'm pleasently surprised. Hopefully he can add a bit of mongrel to our pack. Maybe he can show Tilse how to use his big frame to better use. Cos at the moment Tilse is getting f*ckin smashed on a weekly basis.

Hopefully this is the first of a few intelligent signings.
