2018 world cup bid would help league

10 stadiums with at least 40k capacity in 9 cities are the minimum requriements.

I believe that 60k is the minimum capacity for the semis.

EAS, Skilled Park, Darry Farmers, New Melbourne Stadium would be upgraded.

This is exciting stuff for Australian Football and RL! :D

Unfortunately I think the lack of adequate facilities at the moment, would count against any bid for the Cup.

Over here in England its pretty big news that the UK is going to bid in 2018 and I think they may get it to be honest, its been a while (66 I think?) since they last had it, and they have the stadia to deal with it now.

Since when was the fifa cup the world's biggest sporting event? I thought that was the Olympics?

World Cup is heaps bigger. Some Australians don't really realise how big it is because we missed out for so long. The money and interest from other countries is enourmous.

Good. Rather see my NRL and AFL teams running around rather than a bunch of soccer divers to be honest. Do not want any interference to our sporting season's.

Diver? hahah you're always going on about how you support Milan, a f**king Italian team.

Then put it on after the Grand Finals, not before

total dickhead.

Do you realise that the A-League season starts in August.

wanker!

You really are a stupid merkin of mammoth proportions. Firstly, this would not inject millions into the economy, rather billions. Secondly, do you think FIFA is going to move the dates of the biggest sporting event in the world to fit in with league and AFL? Hahaha.

Never heard more truer words than them.

Well done sir!

Yes, we have a lack of stadiums.

But, so do South Africa. They are having to build a few 40k+ stadiums, and upgrade the others such as Ellis Park and Soccer City.

Yes, England are bidding for 2018 and have a good chance of getting it. They did last host it in 66. But who gives a sh*t? We haven't had it once!

But apparently, the hosts for 2018 and 2022 are being selected at the same conference in 2011. So we will probably go for both. :D

NP and Raiduh are the only ones showing any sense in this topic.

locky is proving to be as thick as ever, claiming to be a football fan when it suits him and being anti-WC when it doesn't.

People who think the Olympics is bigger are simply being naive

And more importantly, people who think that the MCG ](*,) would host World Cup matches, let alone the final, are mad.

I know I'm right, good day

Unfortunately many of those idiots South of the Victorian border think so, to the point where that idiot Brumby suggested Victoria's participation in the bid would be conditional on the final, semi-finals and third place playoff all being hosted at the MCG.

One thing anybody who's followed WC bids in the past will be able to tell you is that one thing FIFA absolutey despises more than anything is when there is infighting within associations as to who will get what games etc.

Mark your last point is the real clincher for RL. The grounds must be rectangular, and big. In Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth none exist of any real worth so they must be upgraded dramatically, this would be a huge boost for league moving into emerging markets allowing supporters to watch a game properly rather than from 50m away.

Newcastle are allready a huge winner in the soccer boom with the knights and the jets seemingly able to get funding now for things where the knights alone never could.

Dairy Farmers - upgrade to 40k
Suncorp - 52k
Skilled - upgrade to 40k
EAS - upgrade to 40k
SFS - 45k
ANZ - 82k
Canberra - upgrade to 40k
Melbourne - make that new rectangular stadium 60k
Skilled (Geelong) - upgrade to 40k
Adelaide - build a 40k rectangular stadium
Stadium WA - 70k (i think)

this way the NRL and AFL seasons could still run during the event.

It will cost the government if they are serious about the bid. I very much doubt whether Fifa would allow any world cup games to be played from cricket venues.

If we are in the running for a world cup, it may seriously mean we will be getting new/updated stadiums.

Why would you want to? We'd get dwarfed by attendances and press coverage. The NRL should shorten the season (and in return have some new plush or upgraded rugby league stadiums)

Well, do any of you listen to question time on the abc 993 i think it is radio station?

Today kevin rudd is flying out at 3pm to speak to people about the world cup bid, and today at question time he is fielding questions about the bid

He WANTS it to happen, everyone in oz practically want it to happen, so they will throw everything they can to get it. It will be in the vicinity of the olympics bid, if not, more. Talking billions overall to have the world cup.

Basically, whatever you put into a wc, you get back way more on. And the prestige as well would be a giant win for australia.

They won't be playing from too many ovals. I am convinced no current oval ground in Australia apart from (maybe) telstra dome when the seats are moved in would be acceptable for fifa.

This means mass upgrades and transport links and ideal rectangle stadiums, a world cup legacy for years and years.

So i hope we get the winning bid too.

edit: just found out germany spent 3 billion oz dollars upgrading and building stadiums for the 2006 world cup.

We are talking upgraded existing facilities, new facilities, transport links, auxillary buildings and services and infrastructure...this will mean every state in oz will have at least one A Class rectangle field, and in nsw and qld, will mean even more. naturally soccer gains the most, but rl will do very well considering we are not soccer. Everywhere in australia will have great league/soccer stadiums.

It would be a very short season.

the NRL needs one of the big stadiums for the Grand Final , say the world cup would be played from mid June that means the GF would need to be played at the latest on the 15th May.

Even if you started the season in early feb , you would only be looking at a 11-12 week season with the finals at 4 weeks.

no way the clubs agree to that unless they are compensated for the lost income. Not too mention the broadcasters would want compensation.

Personally i see no reason why the season shouldnt go ahead. Infact you could run some promotions to get the international visitors to get to some Rugby League games.

We could probably get a tri nations running in England to take advantage of the fact that all soccer comps have stopped. Or some sort of tour by Australian and NZ teams around the world. Some sevens comps while the WC is on, show the diversity of our game. Would state of origin be allowed to be run, as it is not a competition as such?

right...let me tell you about the FIFA world cup bid process..the FOOTBALL FEDERATION AUSTRALIA has to bid not the AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT...all the government can do is back the FFA bid...actually political involvement is strictly banned by FIFA..and they take a dim view on politicians becoming overally involved, apart from the sports minister of course..who would be expected to be part of the FFA delgation..

as you may know England are also bidding for the 2018 world cup and all that has been said by our government is "we back & support 100% the FA's bid for the 2018 world cup"........thats it...it's not the governments job to win world cup bids..so wind your politicians in before they kill your bid..

also FIFA will have final say on everything..none of the stadiums that have sold naming rights will be allowed to becalled whatever they are named...no ANZ, no energy australia no telstra etc....and they curtainly won't allow cross promotions with RL

if your reffering to what i posted , i was suggesting the NRL and the clubs target international visitors . Theres nothing FIFA can do to stop that. Though im sure they would stop it if they could.

and on the subject of political involvment our Prime Minister is addressing the FIFA congress in a matter of hours. Seems strange if they dont like political involvment.

FIFA would put a stop to it..every poster, billboard, bus stop etc.. will be under FIFA control and if anyone caught handing out NRL flyers would be told to stop

as for politcal involvement...countries have been banned because the government was too invloved with the running of the sport in that country...i think kenya was the most recent..and turkey have been warned too i think....i'll go find the FIFA laws and get back to you on exactly what it says about government involvement..

whats rudd going to say at this FIFA congress? cos if he goes on about giving australia the world cup then you won't get it..
