never been to a world cup then?

sponsors pay billions of dollars to be associated with the FIFA world cup and FIFA protect them like their lives depended on it.....

FIFA would put a stop to it..every poster, billboard, bus stop etc.. will be under FIFA control and if anyone caught handing out NRL flyers would be told to stop

as for politcal involvement...countries have been banned because the government was too invloved with the running of the sport in that country...i think kenya was the most recent..and turkey have been warned too i think....i'll go find the FIFA laws and get back to you on exactly what it says about government involvement..

whats rudd going to say at this FIFA congress? cos if he goes on about giving australia the world cup then you won't get it..

sorry but thats rubbish

as long as trade marks arent breached and advertising doesnt occur at fifa controlled venues you can do whatever you like.

FFS , were not living in occupied france here.

Mate your missing the point.

no one is suggesting images of soccer or the fifa world cup be directly mentioned.

what i am suggesting is advertising the NRL to international visitors. As long as trade marks arent breached and the advertising doesnt occur at FIFA venues there is nothing they can do to stop it.

FIFA dont control everything.

and where are you going to advertise to international visitors? thats what i'm getting at, anywhere they (fans) are going to congrate will be under FIFA controlled advertising...bus routes on the way to stadiums, away from airports, train stations, parks that'll be used as fan zones etc...

FIFA does control everything..

edit: just found out germany spent 3 billion oz dollars upgrading and building stadiums for the 2006 world cup.

We are talking upgraded existing facilities, new facilities, transport links, auxillary buildings and services and infrastructure...this will mean every state in oz will have at least one A Class rectangle field, and in nsw and qld, will mean even more. naturally soccer gains the most, but rl will do very well considering we are not soccer. Everywhere in australia will have great league/soccer stadiums.

I can only imagine our government would want to out-do previous worldcup hosts (just like Aus out-classed/out-spent previous Olympic hosts). $3 Billion + would be great, not only for stadiums but City infrastructure in general.

How about this for an idea:

Split the NRL season in two halves, and shorten it to 18-20 weeks.

The first half of the season runs until 2 weeks before the world cup starts. After FIFA take our stadiums over, teams move to the smaller ones.

Whilst the world cup is running, the NRL runs a tournament, similar to the old Amco cup, incorporating the NRL sides and any other top level side (QLD Cup, JB Cup, Bartercard Cup) that wants to enter it, with finals out of Parramatta Stadium or Ballymore or any one of the larger stadiums still available. U20s players should be promoted (hell, it could even be stipulated that 5 or 6 U20s players have to play per side) in it. Get Fox to cover it on Fox 3 or something like that, and schedule it so there are no matches on in the same city as World Cup games on the same day.

We'll get annhailated in the media coverage, but at least this way there's league on for the die hards.

Being honest, I wouldn't give a rats what was happening in the league if we had a world cup locally.

Sydney CBD
Bondi Beach
Darling Harbour

and i presume they will be watching some TV and listing to some local radio while there here too.

basically everywhere tourists go. They wont be doing everything under fifa controlled conditions 24/7.

you think FIFA are'nt going to stick a big screen down on bondi and have it as a fanzone

honest question cos i can't remember...but what did the NRL do during the 2000 olympics? did it carry on? did it start & finish early?

I reckon Olympic Park will be almost as packed as the Olympics...they'd set up big screens through the parks and probably some bars too and all the tourists could watch every game in there...

they may well put a big screen there , but they wont control the whole area FFS.

seriously talk about evading the point.

The problem is I'm reasonably certain that it needs to be during the European off season, which is June-ish (the next world cup and all of the previous ones have been early-mid June).

We'd need to split the season in the middle IMO.

lol, look at you coming on board and waving your doom stick! :D

You are right. If you are referring to what i wrote, I am only saying the facts.

I don't have the inclination to actively follow it up, but I do listen to question time every afternoon from 2pm now, so if its on there tommorow (they dont do it on friday i am pretty sure) or well then next time its on, I would hear about it.

Who knows what rudd intends to do. I think he may be meeting with the FFA. But one thing is for sure, ffa dont have 3 billion dollars to improve facilities, etc to help their bid. If they got that much money then that would be backing the FFA, not running the show.

i'm not waving a doom stick

i'm just saying your politicians need to back off and put their weight behind the FFA,give the FFA everything they need but let the FFA take the lead..

My solution is move the NRL matches to different grounds.

About 2 million out of 3 million tickets at the 06 World Cup were sold to tourists and I reckon that the tourists wouldn't mind seeing this awesome game called Rugby League. :p

Broncos -> Queensland Sport and Athletic Centre or Ballymore

Bulldogs -> Belmore or Sydney Showground

Raiders -> Manuka Oval

Titans -> Carrara or Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre

Storm -> Telstra Dome - I reckon the new Melbourne ground will get upgraded to 50k and would therefore be one of the stadiums used.

Knights -> No. 1 Sports Ground

Cowboys -> Cazaly's Stadium or Browne Park?????

Dragons -> OKI Jubilee, i.e no games at WIN Stadium during World Cup

Rabbitohs -> If they are still South Sydney move the games to the Showground or the SCG. If they are the Central Coast Rabbitohs there would be no dramas.

Roosters -> SCG

You know it makes sense

I don't think the FIFA are going to feel threatened by any NRL advertising. There won't be much any purely because the cost of advertising space will go up 1000% on the lead up and during the WC. Given the state of NRL funding at the moment, I don't think it will be an issue. They might get a couple of beer coasters in some pubs however.

-----------

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

Sydney has enough boutique stadiums to accomodate the clubs, and there are plenty of alternate venues for the other state clubs.

AFL are the ones who are farked. Because of their superstadiuming over the last few years, all of their boutique venues have fallen into disrepair.

I'd be happy if Easts played out of Henson for a couple months. It would be like 1987 again and it would help the Jets cause.
