Hang on.....

if the reason all squads havent been distributed is due to individual nations not updating their websites, or issueing press releases... what the hell is Colin Love being paid $100 000 for?????

If this is the case - this is absolutely criminal.. regardless of the administrative resources available to the individual nations, surely the organisers of RLWC 2008 could issue them??? Isnt that what their being paid for?

Could you imagine the IRB not issuing all squads in a press release for a RWC?

spud, white said he was available because he thought he was no chance of playing for australia. it is a disgrace that white was even contemplating playing for ireland and shows how far we have got to go in regards to country swapping. the ONLY reason white even made himself available for ireland is because it would not affect his chances with nsw and australia in the future. the real farce would have been white running out for ireland, and if he doesnt make australia he probably still will unfortunately.

The rules on this are quite clear. A player is allowed one switch per world cup year, after he has accepted selection for a nation. Brett White (as far as i can work out) sought clearance for the RLIF to play for Ireland (his first ever rep country). Ireland heard about this and automatically announced his selection for Ireland in the upcoming World cup squad, although the squad was not fully selected or made public. Again this was accepted by Brett White, and made public. Brett White was an irishman for all intensive purposes.

Now, Brett is not stuck by the decision. He can commit to Australia, and change nations once in a world cup cycle. The problem is that he needs to write a letter to the RLIF (because he accepted representation for Ireland within 2 years). We know this because of the precedent set in the Feleti Mateo case. Clearly this hasnt happened. Therefore, he is not currently eligible for Australia at this stage. And his naming in the World cup is on par with New Zealand's selection of Nathan Fien a few years ago. If he seeks clearance and is awarded it before the World cup then he can still play for australia, but he cannot possibly be in their current squad.

The RLIF should enforce the rules they currently have. That is what will give them the most credibility, not trying to create a hybrid between getting competive nations, not allowing GP players, forcing domestics, bowing to Australian needs, etc

I do see your point, but i actually think that the squads have been released far too quickly. I would have preferred to see one or two released per day, so that we could have the focus on each nation individually for a small amount of time.

I have to say, i dont think that the RLIF, in their promotion of this event, seem to have realised the need to promote the individual nations and players in that nation, to the general public. I could be wrong, but Samoa v Tonga should be promoted to the hilt where it is being played. The Rocky game has no excuse at all for not being a massive event and a sell out. It isnt too late though. Hopefully the individual games will start to be promoted soon.

The phrase "I don't think...the RLIF seem to have realised" should be allowed any more. The simple, most common sense things seem to elude them.

They're pathetic.

Regardless, if this was a professionaly run world cup, the PR manager would have made sure all nations were aware of their responsiblities beforehand, and ensured consistent outcomes.

THE NSWRL is the ARL

Just check out the "contact us" page on the arl website

surely there is a conflict of interests when the same people run the nswrl, the arl and the rlif. the rlif should be independent of all other rugby league organisations. it should be the one ruling body over our sport, where all full member nations have an equal say. why is australia more important than someone like france?

awesome! looking forward to it. i like how they are having seperate announcements for each squad so each country can get some exposure. also, having the announcements in the towns they are playing in is great publicity for their upcoming games.

When is the Scotland squad announced?

Could a mod split the Australian squad/discussion into a seperate thread?

Scotland and England have refused to announce their squads until they trim them to 24, don't know when that is.

I guess they have a point when so many players have been picked in more than one squad.

england & scotland have'nt named squad because they did'nt have too...nobody did, the RLIF only invited nations to announce their 40 man squads......and we declined the invation...simple really, no conspiracy,no waiting to see what players were left...we just did'nt want too..

Smart move by the Scots. History shows us that as soon as a nation unveils a new player they magically shoot from obscurity to being on the verge of Australian selection. This way, it will ensure the aussies dont poach anyone else who has committed to the Scots. (See for example Simpson (ire) Wallace (sco) Mateo (ton) etc.
