The Captaincy?

I don't get the point of the © these days. The coach makes all the calls. So other than being the go-to man for the ref, really, what is he good for ?

Compare a cricket captain who constantly makes calls about field placings, bowler changes or when to declare etc an NRL captain really does f**k all. So for mine, care factor zero.

Well, at the STH Coaches forum, Hagan pointed to a number of instances where we had received a penalty, he sent instructions out as to whether to take the 2 or not, and Captain Cayless went the other way. One example was the match against Nth Qld, we got a penalty late in the game, Hages wanted to go for the six and Cayless took the 2.

Brian Smith would not have put up with that flagrant disregard of his authority. An SMS would have followed. ;-)

To me. the captain has two major responsibilities:

1. To ensure the standard of play on a week to week basis is as high as possible
2. To make decisions to enable the team to win the game.

IMO both Cayless and Finch should not have this job. Neither of them meet those criteria in that both are inconsistent, but more importantly, both make horrible mistakes at crucial times.

IMO there are only two choices - Hindy, and Felti. Hindy has proven over years he is better at concentrating on his own game than lifting teammates with him.

In my book it should be Feleti. He is the bloke that has most consistently produced the necessary play to win games in the balance, and has been clearly our best player.

He need his game to go to the next level (ie more selective, get fitter, and get tougher). The captaincy could provide that. However he needs a hard-arse coach to believe in him and back him.

At this stage Hagan looks likely to put his faith in blokes who have been around longer.

tbh I reckon we should tell Hindy that he's it whether he likes it or not .... hell he is captain for about 30 mins of each game anyway (when caylo is off)

and yeah, I'd start grooming feleti and matt keating for future leadership roles

i reckon finch is too much of a hot head - don't want a guy incharge who might piss the ref off .... and besides, finch is gonna yap all game if he has the (c) next to his name or not

The fact that Cayless has held the captaincy for 8 years shows he his stature within the club. Neither Smith, Taylor nor Hagan ever dropped him from that role and to me that says something.

I don't think it's fair for people like us, who don't know the players and don't know much about what goes on behind the scenes, to be commenting on who should lead the side. Finch seems like an ideal captain however he already has enough of a hands on role as it is I don't think putting extra pressure on him is the way to go.

Very good point.

Plus I think there's a deeper issue at play - the team fails to fire up when they should. Captain issue, or something more?

I think the reason why Cayless is captain cause they're too scared to ask him to relinquish the role, i wouldn't want to ask him to hand it over that's for sure.

We need a new breed, Hayne, Finch are the obvious candidates.

so is Michael Hagan

No offence, but I don't see Michael Hagan as a man who demands respect.

Cayless, whilst he is out of form, is still a former New Zealand captain and used to be one of the top props in the game. Plus he's been captain of our beloved club for ages. I'd say he deserves some respect.

Hagan...Couldn't coach a star-studded Queensland side to a victory over NSW; coached a star-studded Newcastle team to an "upset" Grand Final victory over a young Eels line-up and has done nothing since.

Gap? yeah, I'd say so.

Its not the advantange line i am concerned about, behind the goal line. After tries, we tend to drop our bundle. How often this year did we concede consecutive tries within a short space of time.

Brett Finch for mine.

mateo. showed this yr he is willing to talk it up on the field and try and motivate other players. also has the ability to show the others how to get it done. this is the guy the eels need to build the team around. and he can bust a move
