Nine scores Grand Final Victory
http://www.ebroadcast.com.au/enews/nine/NINE-SCORES-GRAND-FINAL-VICTORY-061008.html

Last night the Nine Network scored massive ratings for coverage of the NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final in which the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles avenged their 2007 loss by defeating the Melbourne Storm 40–0, the biggest grand final win ever, in this, rugby league’s centenary year.

The grand final was watched by a peak national audience of 2.465 million, with Nine’s coverage averaging 2.074 million across the five mainland capital cities. Nine screened the match live in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, with 60.6 per cent of the audience tuning in to watch the Eagles win their first premiership in 12 years.

Across the East Coast stations, Nine’s live coverage of the game peaked at 2.289 million viewers and averaged 1.936 million between 5.15pm and 7.00pm (match time), securing a 66.3 per cent audience share.

In Sydney, the Grand Final audience peaked at 1.107 million at 6.59pm, after averaging 942,000 viewers between 5.15pm and 7.00pm – an incredible 75.5 per cent of the audience.

In Brisbane a huge 75.5 per cent of the audience watched the game, with a peak of 595,000 (5.59pm) and an average of 503,000 viewers between 5.15pm and 7.00pm.

In Melbourne, Nine’s live coverage won every quarter of its timeslot and attracted 48.9 per cent of the audience. The game attracted a peak audience of 587,000 (6.30pm) and an average of 492,000 viewers.

Nine’s coverage of the 2008 NRL grand final was also the number one show across the 5 City Metro for People 25-54, 16-39 and 18-49.

Nationally, Nine won Sunday night with a 33.2 per cent Total People share. Seven finished behind Nine with 25.2 per cent while Ten (18.8) was third.

In Sydney, Nine recorded a massive 42.2 per cent Total People share. Seven trailed behind Nine on 22.7 per cent, with Ten and the ABC (15.3) lagging 27.1 points behind Nine’s winning share.

Nine was again number one in Brisbane and Melbourne last night, with 34.6 and 29.1 per cent Total People shares respectively, leaving Seven (Brisbane – 25.5, Melbourne – 25.3) and Ten (Brisbane – 18.6, Melbourne – 21.6) behind.

Despite it being a one sided affair it still rated well.

The Sydney ratings are pretty good but a bit puzzling. 30,000 more watching on TV but no sell out. Plus it started earlier and it was a huge blowout.

Good ratings in Perth considering the 2pm (I think) start in there.

Melbourne and Adelaide are a bit disappointing.

I think nearly 50 percent of the audience in melbourne is pretty good considering that Billy Slater could walk down the main street in Melbourne with a sign around his neck saying 'I am Billy Slater' and not be recognised

In Adelaide it was up against the local Aussie Rules Comp Grand Final which most people watch and itself attracts 30k plus crowds to the stadium.

The master stroke is playing on the long weekend!! Always going to be a ratings booster.

As for the blowout...lol people didn't tune n knowing it was going to be did they? The score of finals don't effect the ratings on the whole.

Lets be honest these figures are not the best... the score line can be blamed for a lot of it but overall I would not call the daytime grand final as a raging success.

I think what people enjoy but is the tradition of the day and chopping and changing every few years trying to predict what people will like better is crap.

Better just to say its gonna be 3pm Sunday or 7pm Sunday for the next 5 years.. This lets see how it goes mentality is a joke...

But are ratings figures ONLY taken in metro areas?

Yep regional figures will follow in a few days.... But they are not as highly regarded as metro figures..

Im assuming the ads on regional stations don't command much compared to their metro counterparts so they don't really count them.

Seems strange in this day and age to exclude viewers in areas such as Gold Coast / Wollongong / Newcastle / Central Coast etc... I'm sure they all go to the shops and consume products like people in Sydney and Brisbane...

Of course it does. The tv ratings are an average. With a quarter of the game to go Manly were winning 24 - 0. Once Lima lost the ball Manly were sure things. You dont think thered be casual fans who would have stopped watching after the result was decided?

The ones in this thread are. They're Oztam's 5 city sample (Syd, Mel, Bri, Ade, Per). Regional figures (as well as the total number) will come soon, and as is always the case, the gap between the AFL and NRL will be sizeable in League's favour.

I think someone could direct you to articles which point out that NNSW commands as much tv advertising revenue as Adelaide IIRC.

Would love to know the methodology they have for getting these stats. How exactly did they count the 150 people in the pub with me watching it on the big screen?

Dont disagree with you... Thats why this way of doing the ratings is old and antiquated. But according to Gallop this is what tv stations look at when buying the rights...

The gap wont be all that great this year, last year including regionals we had 3.7mil (2.4 oztam), AFL had 3.3 mil (2.5 oztam). This year i think the AFL got just over 3 mil including regionals so with our oztam down we should be getting around 3.1-3.2. I can see nein pushing for a night grand final again soon.

Re: the gap, I should clarify that I was refering to regional figures. Overall it tends to pan out relatively even or with us slighty ahead as you suggested, but the AFL's appeal outside the Oztam cities has always been appalling for an alleged national game.
