Kangaroos doctor confident

09/10/2008 12:19 PM
Steve Orme

Team doctor Hugh Hazzard is confident all 24 players named in the Kangaroos World Cup squad will be available for selection for this months tournament opener against the Kiwis.

Hazzard cast his eye over the Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra-based players at the Sydney Football Stadium on Thursday morning including Manly's four newcomers David Williams, Glenn Stewart, Josh Perry and Anthony Watmough.

While three days of celebrations had clearly taken a toll on the Sea Eagles stars, they will be ready to go when the squad assembles on Saturday week.

Obviously there's a few guys got a few little niggles after the grand final, a few bumps and bruises but I mean they'll be fine by the time we get to the first game (against New Zealand) on October 26," Hazzard said.

The experienced medico hosed down speculation Broncos centre Justin Hodges may succumb to a shoulder injury.

"He's had a chronic shoulder problem but he's played with it all year mate so he's going to keep playing with it," he said.

Hazzard will head to Melbourne on Monday to assess Greg Inglis, Israel Folau, Billy Slater and Cameron Smith, as well as Michael Crocker who remains in some doubt with rib damage suffered in Sunday's decider.

"I've heard just that he's got a whack in the ribs so we'll see when we get down there," he said when pressed for details of Crocker's ailment.

I hope Justin is ok. Should he be risked for the World Cup or should he rest, possibly have surgery, and be fresh for next season?

Hell no should he be rested. International league is becoming a joke primarily due to clubs not allowing players to play international football and I'd be very disapointed if we started doing it ourselves. If he's been good enough to play through the injury for the Broncos all year then he's good enough to play through the injury for the Kangaroos.

This is what I heard a few days ago as well. He is 50/50 chance of having the surgery.

Obviously Hodges will try to do everything he can to get onto the field and good for him. But, if the medicals say no you got to have the reconstruction then that is 6 months just there - would return April next year. If he plays, he risks further damage.

I dunno what to say about this I'm divided. It's good/bad in both ways you look at it.

That's life. International League should always come first and it'd be a shame if the club forgot that in Bennett's absence.

If he is to miss any Brisbane games, he should miss the WC- Australia will win anyway, so it does not matter if he is there or not

Australia don't need him to win the damn thing, Broncos do. The Broncos are the ones paying him why should they let him play with the potability for further damage and maybe missing more time. f**k the WC the whole thing is a joke. Picking Tupou over Thaiday just so Tupou wont play for a lesser nation. the whole thing reeks bullsh*t.

f**k it let's pull Lockyer as well, Australia don't need him either to win and we wouldn't want to risk any injury. It's attitudes like yours that would see the game confined to the eastern seaboard of Australia and Auckland in New Zealand and just die a slow and painful death. We can't afford to be insular like the AFL when we have a direct competitor for our playing talent in Rugby Union who do actually put their international game first and get great rewards from doing so.

The clubs need to start realising that a stronger international scene means a stronger and more profitable Rugby League which in turn feeds right back to the clubs. Instead most can't see beyond their own self interest and will never be anything other than big fish in a small pond.

Oh and I don't think form or rival players has anything to do with Thaiday's exclusion from the squad and the same goes for Hunt.

If Lockyer needed a knee re-con that would set him back 6 months would you be all "no let him play- f**k it if he gets a career ending injury as long as Australia win but 50 instead of 40" Hodges is Injured, he needs a shoulder re-con - yes he probably could play but the sooner he gets it done the sooner he gets back to training and the sooner he becomes 100% fit. do you realise if he plays injured he could well make the injury worse and be out for a whole year or worse f**k up his career. Lets be honest Hodges only made the team on reputation - why?- because he has been playing injured and his form has suffered. so lets get him fixed and ready to go round 1.

Oh and just because you have nine thousand of posts don't pretend you know anything at all about why Thaiday and Hunt weren't selected, I think you would be surprised.

Yeah because if a player needs a knee reconstruction they can really keep playing, great example there. If Hodges was good enough to play through the injury and risk further damage for the Broncos then he's good enough to play through the injury and risk further damage for the Kangaroos. The concept isn't that hard to grasp.

Yes because the number of posts on an internet forum was always an indicator of one's Rugby League knowledge. Glad you cleared that myth up for us buddy. Just because you come in here and pretend you have inside knowledge on the club don't expect me to treat you as anything other than just another nuffy trying to sound important on the internet.

Thanks for expressing my point of view for me. I want him to play if he's good enough to pass a fitness test.
This is what you said to begin with that got be fired up.

The point of the article was that he isn't well enough to play, he was playing with injury because he wanted to win another premiership and was waiting until the end of the season, you can whinge all you want about how he should be playing for the good of the game but if he isn't fit enough to play and can risk further damage then pull him out. f**ks sake i only come to this forum to look at what other people are thinking and it is f**k heads like you that make this place such a sh*t hole.
